DEAR POLLY My hint is to make quilting much easier. Heat parafiin (same as used for jams and jellies) until it is good and hot Place whole spools of thread in it and keep hot for a few minutes so the melted wax permeates the whole spool. The thread then glides through the material so much more easily and it makes threading the nee dle simpler, too. I do hope you print this for the sake of the el derly women quillers who do not know it as 1 am sure it will help them.-URS. J.S.E. Quilting fabrlo for slip cov ers not only adds to their smart appearance but they will last longer because of the extra pad ding on the back. Use care when melting the paraffin and dipping the spools POLLY DEAR POLLY-When I buy a new pair of shoes, 1 wear them around tlie house for a few hours to be sure they fit correct ly. I slip an old pair of socks over the new shoes to keep them from being marred, so that the store will exchange them if they do not fit. There is a difference in the way shoes feel when walking on hard sur faces and on a soft carpet. I do this with every pair of shoes I buy.-MRS. E. S. DEAR POLLY Before each shampoo remove all the hair from your brush by using your comb. Then work up a good lather of shampoo and run the comb and brush through your shampoo-covered hair. Done ev ery time you wash your hair this method should keep your comb and brush clean without too much time or effort. MISS G G DEAR POLLY-I saved baby food jars, painted the lids to match the walls in the room where I sew and placed them on a rack near my sewing machine. In the jars 1 keep snaps, pins, buttons, hooks and eyes, spare thimbles and so on. I keep the needles in a clean plastic pill vial in tlie sewing machine drawer, I can tell at a glance where anything is. I save all the boxes that new shoes come in and keep them stacked on the slielf in my sew ing room. I keep one for cards of buttons, another for bias tape and rickrack, one for elastic and zippers and then there is one for threads and so on. On the end of each box I write what it con-tains.-MRS. W. If you already had an animal in the house before your baby was born, there Is no problem. Otherwise the answer would de pend largely on the age of the child and how badly he wants i pet. Most children under 6 are not ready for a pet. but once they reach that age, If (hey want one, they should have one. It is a great experience for them to watch a young animal grow and to learn to get along with a creature that is dependent on them. Although y o u r child should have much of the responsibility for tlie care ol his pet, it is not right to hold him to this too ri gidly, at least until he is in his teens. Tho kind of pet he can have will depend on such fac tors as tho type of living quar ters you have and how much you can afford to pa. If you live on a farm a colt, heifer, lamb or shoal might be an Ideal pet. for most city dwellers a dog or a cat would be preferable. If you ive in a small apartment you may have to settle for a small bird, tropical fish, white mice or a hamster. Pets are sometimes sur prisingly tolerant of teasing, but pushed too far they may react with villous suddenness. If your child Is old enough, he should read a pamphlet or book on tlie care of his pet. Such material can be obtained from your local anti-cruelly society or the public library. Don't ap proach or touch a pet when It is eating and above all never try to lake its food away from it. Eating is just as absorbing a matter to tin pet as it Is to a human being.
