Continuing Terror Grips Survivors Of Dam Tragedy In Italian Valley Editor's Note: United Press International correspondent Harry Slalhos has toured the disaster area of the Plave Riv er Valley In Italy, Hvhero 3,000 to 4,000 persons died and eight villages were wiped out. In the following dispatch, lie describes the continuing terror which grips (lie people still alive. ,' By HARRY STATHOS .. My moth er is a very good seamstress and the following discovery Is all her own. when she makes round cord sashes for dicssos she takes an old nylon stocking and splits the leg down the front and back right to ho toe. The too joins the two lengths. Then she puts a safety pin in one end of this long nylon rope and pulls It through the material that has been etitched togctlier on the wrong side and turned. As the oho who wears those inventive creations, I would say they are lighter, cooler and quick-drying, t am writing but Mom should get Hie credit.-JOANNE GIRLS Mom gets the credit and a Polly Dollar will soon be on Its way to her. Leave the hook part on to hang over tire clothes line and bend the body part Into the shape nf a leg and foot for tlie socks. The men in my family wear heavy home knit wool socks for hunling and winter soi'ls and these hangers keen them from shrinking and mailing. And now for a good way to mako some very smart little tea aprons from your husband's old shirts. Cut through the yoke, leaving enough of tlie double fab ric for a bell. "Oh God, here it comes" again,' said one woman. Then the rumble died away and the people of this stricken village once again turned their attention to the food and medical supplies brought to them by the helicopter. During the duvs since the Wednesday night disaster, there have been constant small land slides. The people here arc afraid there will he another one. They want to leave but there is no way out. Whenever the ground rumbles there is stark fear in their eyes. This correspondent went to Cas so and two other villages near the once-filled reservoir with a U.S. Army cargo helicopter from the southern European task force based in Verona. Within hours after the catustrophe struck, these helicopter crews were on the scene and since have been operating almost around the clock bringing in food and fnem cities. The Dow-Jones industrial aver age finished the week at 741.76, off 3.30. Of 1,48 issues traded. 725 declined while only 588 ad vanccd. Sizable gains in Chrysler early in the week reflected a rumor that the company would split its slock at 100. Thiokol moved up on a rumor that it would merge with Chrys ler rising 4'i despite a denial of this by Chrysler. Sperry Rand dipped l's despite a rumor that the company will have higher earnings in the final half of its fiscal year and also that its busi ness machine and computer busi ncss is finally heading into the black. Sugar slocks moved higher fol lowing news that hurricane Flora wiped out about half of Cuba ! sugar crop. Although Cuban sugar is no long' cr purchased in the U.S., it was noted that its loss is felt on the world market and the effect trans mitted to the domestic market.
