Columnist Offers Tips On Tipping By ANN LANDERS Dear Ann Landers: I have read a few letters in your col umn about tipping. All the yell- i ing seems to be about whether to tip or not to tip. As you pointed out, tipping is an established part of life in these United States, whether we like it or not. What I would like to see in print is a few tins on when to tip and how much to tip. Will you help me as well as thousands of others who are also unsure? Thanks. GRASSY GREEN Dear Grassy: A good rule of thumb when dining out Is this: Tip 15 per cent of the bill for good service. For especially gpoa service or extra attention, make it closer to 20 per cent. If vou are grabbing a quick bite at a lunch counter ana u uie gai did nut treat you as if she was slopping the hogs, leave 15 cents under the plate. If you had only a cup of coffee and she served you more coffee In the cup than In the saucer, leave live cents. Taxi drivers are a hard-working bunch and since many of them are philosophers and political sci entists as well as drivers, the conversation Is worth something, A 15 cent tip on a 50 cent me. ter, 20 cents on a 70 cent meter and two-bits on a dollar ride is about right. If you slay ip a hotel always leave a lip for the maid. Annul 50 cents a night is right. The bell-boy who takes the luggage to your room should get at least 50 cents for the trip with one bag, and a dollar for two bags or more. A bootblack should get a dime, and when you buy a newspaper tia the street it's nice to let the man keen the extra pennies or the nickel. The beauty operator should be tipped 15 per cent of the bill un less the operator owns the shop. Most shop owners refuse to accept tips. Offer anyway. 11 you are a weekend guest in the home of a friend or relative and there Is a maid (in the place you should leave the maid a cou ple of dollars in an envelope with her name on it.
