Koufax Took Command A 25-game winner with 306 strikeouts in 311 innings and a backdrop of two no hitters and two games in which he struck out 18 batters during his career, Kou fax took command of the Yank ees like - a big league pitcher would take command of a high school team. He struck out the first five bat ters to face him and nine of the first 12. After four innings the Yankees had hit only one fair ball. He blazed his fast ball past them. He confused them with his deep-breaking fast curve. And he made them look ridiculous with his change - up thrown with the same motion as the high, hard one. This was supposed to be a match-up of star pitchers -7 Kou fax vs. Whitcy Ford, who started the game with a 10-5 World Se ries record. LOS ANGELES (UPI) - The manipulation of quarterbacks, a familiar Los Angeles Ttam prob lem, is also becoming a concern of the UCLA Bruins. UCLA coach Bill Barnes earlier in the week announced that Lar ry Zcno would start at quarter hack for the Bruins against Stan ford Saturday and Wednesday said that Mike Haffncr, a former single wing tailback, will even tually get a trial at quarterback, too. Ilaffner was one of the top run ning backs in West Coast football during his sophomore year, 1961, but sat out last year because of injury. Haffner has had difficulty becoming effective as a T-forma Uon halfback. Barnes said It was hoped his passing ability could be used bet ter at quarterback, although he still stands third in line behind Zcno and Steve Sindell. October 3, 1963 Candy' Is Of Koufax Frank Howard's 457-foot double, singles by Bill Skowron and Dick Tracewski and Johnny Roseboro's three-run homer gave the Dod. gers four runs in the second in ning and that was it. It was obvi ous the Yankees could not over come such a handicap against Koufax and the brilliant left hander just kept mowing 'em down. Two Tough Innings Koufax had two tough innings because he lost the pinpoint control of his curve ball in the fifth and sixth. The Yankees put together three singles with two out in the fifth but Sandy fanned pinch hitter Hector Lopez to end that threat and they got two straight walks in the sixth with one out only to have Sandy re tire Mickey Mantle and Roger Marls on infield pops. Tom Tresh hit a two-run hom er in the eighth but by then Kou- lax was throwing fast balls for strikes and he quickly closed out the game. ' After the seventh, the crowd of 69,000 was cheering for Sandy to break Carl Erskine s mark of 14 strikeouts in one game, set against the Yankees in 1953. Koufax finally accomplished the feat for a new mark of 15 when he buzzed a fast ball past pinch hitter Harry Bright for the final out of the game. NEW YORK (UPI) Florida A4M, trying to shake the brides maid role it inherited last sea son, was off to another good start today as the nation's No. 1 small college football team in the first weekly ratings issued by the United Press International board of coaches. Coach Alonzo Gaither's Rat tlers, who won their 19th straight regular season game last week end by defeating Lincoln College 'Mo.), 44-6. drew seven first place votes for their high scoring performance. Florida A4M. led most of the way in the 1962 ratings, only to give way to Southern Mississippi in the final three weeks of the campaign. Southern Mississippi has since ascended to major col lege status. Delaware, ninth in the final 'B2 UPI ratings, whipped Lebigh, 30-0, and received two first place ballots. The Blue Hens garnered 121 second place points, 71 less than Florida A&M's 192. Northern Illinois opened in third place, up three notches over last year's finish, with three first place votes and Lenoir Rhyne was fourth with the help of two first place ballots. Central Oklahoma State was named fifth in the opening rat ings, down two notches from last' season's finale, and Montana Slate is sixth, followed by San Diego State, and Texas Ail, Wittenberg and Eastern Carolina were tied for ninth place. Wittenberg was the only school among the top 10 that failed to receive at least one first place vote. ( Large Back Joins 49ers SAN FRANCISCO .UPI) - The San Francisco Forty Niners' squad was at 36 players today following the activation of 220 pound running back Mike Lind of Notre Dame. Lind has been out with injuries since before the season opener. His return leaves the squad still one man short of the National Football League limit. New coach Jack Christiansen reported that "both Bob Waters and Lamar McHan have been passing well in practices." Start ing quarterback John Brodie is out for a minimum of six weeks with a reinjured arm, so it's up to McHan and Waters to move the team.
