PAGE-M HERAI.D AND ' . JMf READY FOR SERIES A lot of work is being done to get Yankee Stadium ready for the World Series which gets underway Wednesday. The Los Angeles Dodgers arrived in New York on Monday and Sandy Koufax has been nominated to throw in the open ing game against Whitey Ford, both ace left-handers. Here, ground crews apply fresh topsoil, brought in by tractor, to the home plate area. UPI Telephoto Sport Parade: Ralph Terry Accepts Fate As Yankee Bull Pen Star By OSCAR FRALEY UPI Sports Writer NEW YORK UPI) One year made a tremendous difference in the life of big Ralph Terry but the (all pitcher from Oklahoma shrugs off (he quirks of fate with the studied analysis that "a man has to be realistic." One year ago as the New York Yankees went into the World Se ries, Terry was one of their most potent pitching guns. He had led the American League with 23 triumphs and he followed up wth two wins in fie series, capping a big year with a 1-0 victory over the Giants in a heart-stopping finale. This year he is practicaly ig nored as the Yankees get ready to go in against the 1-os Angeles Dodgers. The talk this time is of Whitey Ford and two younger men, Al Downing and Jim Bouton. And 'the proven mop-up man in the lalo innings is Hal Reniff. Now! See The Complete Line of 1964 British Motor Cars! SPORTS SEDAN NOTHING TO DO! Just take a FREE ride and you are eligible to WIN! V- "..w-" Terry, it was alluded, would be in the bull pen for a "long in ning" relief job. If, in other words, the starter was kayoed early in the game. "How come Terry is in the bull pen?" somebody asked Yank ee manager Ralph Honk. The Iron major fixed the ques tioner with a pair of icy eyes and there was barbed wife in his tone as he said: "I'll pitch whoever I think best." Houk hasn't come out and said pointedly that Terry is in the rocking chair brigade. But he has said that Ford will start the first game. Downing the second and Bouton the third. Which, with a day off for travel to the coast after the first two, brings Ford back again in (lie rotation. Bar ring the possibility that the weak- hitting Dodgers will play bombs away early against one of the starters, Terry may view this one from afar. But he accepts it philosophical ly, by no gesture or inflection hinting that he might he dis gruntled alter another year in which lie led the league in com plete games and Innings pitched. "1 didn't have a bad year," pondered the 27-year-old right Experts Advise Care Of Venison In Field Fresh, flavorful venison for the table starts with careful treat ment of the meat in the field, ad vises Andrew Landforcc, Oregon Stale University extension wild life management specialist. Keep deer meat at its liesl by cooling It quickly the quicker the better, -Landforcc says, lie urges that the deer he skinned as soon as possible. It's ideal wiicn deer can be field dressed and immcdialely taken to camp, home or the cold storage locker to lie skinned, he noted. I'robablv the cleanest meat from the woods is handled this way. However, this isn't always pus sible and lindforce offers t h e following suggestions for care of deer that can't be taken back right away. In Western Oregon, unless the deer is moved easily from the field, dress it, hang it in a tree and skin it at once. Split the car cass in half and leave the last neck vertebrae connect lo help balance the halves while hang ing. Preferably let hang until the meat is no longer sticky. Dry meal is easier to keep clean. Hanging over night in the cold 3-Bedroom 8,800 Tsdy, October 1, 1963 hmp hander who won 17 while losing IS. "But I didn't have a good year, either. Some of those 1 lost could have gone my way but. then, on the other hand, some of those I won could have gone the other way. There is no jealousy in the slender pitcher whose main fault if he has one, is that he refuses to "bruch back" the hitters and they therefore can take a toehold against him. "Bouton is the best righthander in (Tie American League today he observes quietly. "And you can't get away from the fact that Downing has pitched so well he deserves a start." No alibi. No recriminations. And the Yankees know full well that the workhorse pitcher will give them his best at all times. He doesn't know any other way to go. "Whatever I can do." he said, looking forward to the series, "I'll do. But whatever it is, I'm hungry to do a good job." Houk, scheming to get the best tools working against the Dodg ers, admits that "Terry could play a big part lor us." But it has to be small consola tion as he looks back on the head lines of just a year ago. woods is good. The meat gets cold and a glare forms over it. If pack animals are impracti cal, cut tlic deer in quarters and drop each quarter into an individ ual clean cloth hag. Strap your load on the pack board for carry ing out of Ihc woods. Immediately upon reaching your destination, hang meat in a cool, dry place. The cold storage locker is ideal, but lots of good venison has also been cared for in garages and woodsheds. For F.astern Oregon conditions, if you can't get the deer back lo camp and skinned immediately field dress and skin the deer in tlic field. Hanging the deer in a tree is preferred, but, if this is not possible, remove the hide while the deer is lying on the ground. Use the skin and meat sinks lo keep moat clean while skin ning. After Ihc hide is off, quar ter the carcass and put the pieces m individual meat sacks. Pack back to camp and hang it up al once. If it Is not practical to carry the meat back to camp righl away, hang It in a tree or lav il upon poles or rocks to allow air to circuliile around the meal, speeding up the cooling process. It is alas best to let meal hang and thoroughly cool belore moving it. When tlic meat gets a glaze over it. handling is easier and meat can be kept much cleaner. Deer eventually will cool when hung with the hide on. In some cases, deer are downed in cir cumstances which makes skinning impractical, hut even then cool (lie animal as quickly as possible in order to keep the meat at its best, says the specialist. The coach of the 12 national champions tried the three platoon system that proved so successful for his Trojans last season dur ing the first two games. But Monday he told the South ern California Football Writers, "I'm through with the three unit substitution system: I find that 1 can't use it under the new rules. Barnes Likes New Rule But coach Bill Barnes of UCLA found the new substitution rule to his liking and declared that only in an isolated rare instance was he unable lo get a specific man into the game when he wanted to use him. "We played 30 men against Penn State Saturday and had no problems growing out of the sub stitution rule except in one in stance," he said. There wasn't a winner among the three top football teams rep resenting the area. But Barnes was pleased with his team s play in the close loss to Penn State, and Harland Svare of the Los An geles Rams pro club drew some consolation from a strong defen sive effort. McKay, however, did not feel Southern California played a very good game.in dropping a 17-12 de cision to Oklahoma in the nation ally televised game of the week.
