Pictured above during informal practice session, left to right, are Carol Runge, Lila Carlson, Mil- -dred
Luft, first president of the group, Uuphane Mannering, second vice president, and Betty Cross.
In October of 1 957, a few women who liked to sing
met in a group which later was sponsored by the PTA
County Council and today is known as the Melody Mothers.
Still PTA-sponsored, membership in that organiza
tion and a real desire to sing are the only requirements
for membership in Melody Mothers which now numbers
between 30 and 35 women.
Strict adherence to weekly practice sessions under'
the direction of. Ellen Miller every Thursday night from
7:30 to 9:30 in Mills School music room has resulted in
the Melody Mothers ability to provide music for any and
all occasions. ,
Director Ellen Miller is shown above at right check
ing musical scores with the group's accompanist, Anita
Campbell.
The women have sung for many civic functions and
clubs and each year are featured in concert at the PTA
state convention. Their music repertoire ranges from sa
cred, spiritual and folk music to show tunes and popular
standards. Arrangements for appearance dates may be
made by calling the president, Beverly Tucker, TU 4-6707.
