Both bats will figure prominently in the World Series which opens in Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The Dodgers will fly to New York on Monday, Sept. 30. Experts Give Yankees Slight Edge In Series (EDITORS NOTE: The follow ing is the first of three dis patches comparing the World Series rivals, the Yankees and the Dodgers. This story com pares their offense; following stories will compare their de fense and their pitching.) .: By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer NEW YORK (UPI) Rival managers Ralph Hnuk and Walt Alston are in complete agree ment on one point neither team has any real advantage over the other in a short scries Both, of course, are referring In the forthcoming World Scries between the Yankees and Dod gers. Neutral observers, such as managers, scouts and players connected with teams that won't be in the Scries, concede the Yankees a definite edge on of fense despite the Dodgers' great er speed on the base paths. Most of (he Yankee edge, if not all of it, is based on pure power because there is virtually nothing to choose between them as fari as aggregate batting averages are concerned. The Yankees owned a ,2S2i mark through Rames played Sept. 24 while the Dodgers showed .251. The big difference between the two clubs was in total homers up to that date. The Yankees had IRS to the Dodgers' 107. Discounts Power Edge "Okay, so we hit more homers lit than they did," says Houk. "What does that really prove? I've seen teams that were mur dering the hall suddenly stop hit ting in a World Series. And I've seen other teams who were n't hitting a lick suddenly break down the fences once the World Series started." Dodger bench has the power to compare with such Yankee part timers as John Blanchard and Yogi Berra. Have Only One By comparison, the Dodgers have only one man likely to break up a ball game with one swing of the bat and that man is big Frank Howard, who can be pitched to more easily than most of the Yankee sluggers. Next to Howard, Tommy Da vis probably has the most power on the Dodgers unless you wish to include Moose Skowron, who had a disappointing season with only four homers this year. There is one faction that thinks that the vastness of Chavez Ra vine could cut down greatly on the Yankees' power advantage, Maybe so, but the first two games will be played at Yankee Stadium where the American League champions always are at; (heir best, and the sixth and sev enth games also, if they are necessary. So there is no question that in (he matter of home runs, anyway, the Yankees hold the upper hand. Dodgers Have Speed It's a different story on t h e base paths where the Yankees have no one to match the speed of Willie Davis or Maury Wills. It should be borne in mind that Davis and Wills first have to get on base lo do any damage. And should also be remembered "What can you say after a I summed up his feelings following game like that one? a one-sided shellacking suffered at Loach Bob Williams of Klamath Salem. Union High School looked back "I don't know quite what hap over his shoulder at last Friday's pened," he continued, "we made game with South Salem and i a lot of mistakes and after view COAST FOOTBALL ROUNDUP STANFORD.
