Three Groups Plan Session With JFK On Race Problems ' By toiled Press International Three separate gitups meet with President Kennedy in Wash ington today to discuss racial strife in Birmingham. Ala. The President's first conference will be this afternoon with five while Birmingham civic leaders who are to tell him their side of the situation. Kennedy met last week with seven Birmingham Ne gro leaders who told him their grievances. i Later in the evening Kennedy will talk with six clergymen from Birmingham before meeting with a two-man team he appoint ed as his personal representa , lives to Birmingham. About 30 segregationists pickets heckled the group of civic lead ers at Hie Birmingham airport Sunday night and City Council man Don Hawkins had to be re strained from fighting one of the pickets. A federal grand jury resumes its meeting in Birmingham today and possibly will report its find ings on an investigation of inter- lercnce with lederal court or dered desegregation of Birming ham schools. The pilot, Capt. Philip H. Gar- many, 32, Cattanooga, Tenn., was killed. Maj. Gen. H. R. Spicer, com mander of the 25th North Ameri can Air Defense region at Mo Chord Air Force Ba.ie near Ta coma, Sunday appointed Co. D. F. Tarbert to head an investigating team. SALT LAKE CITY UPI-Dem- ocrats from 13 western states made big plans here at their Western States Conference last week. All of them were aimed mainly at two things beating Barry Goldwater and returning in cumbents in the West to olfice. There were many , impassioned speeches about "the cancerous growth of the radical right" and pledges supporting everything President Kennedy docs, from cul ling taxes to supporting the nu clear test ban treaty. But the main purpose of the convention, lost perhaps to the general , public amidst cries of "Bircher," was to set the stage lor the !164 general elections. The West will probably be cru cial in the 1964 presidential elec tion. The Democrats have lost it, and lost it badly, during the past three presidential elections. Re publican Richard M. Nixon won all but three of the western states in I960. Adlai E. Stevenson failed in 1956 and 1952 to take a single western state in his bids against Republican former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Democrats at their confer ence here vowed to do better in 196-t, and they are convinced that Arizona Republican Goldwater is the man they are going to have to do it against. A well coordinated convention and host of Democratic leaders set the pace for the campaign and in effect picked out one of the key issues as (ar as the West is concerned. It, will be the John Birch Society, or in other words they call "the radical right's con trol of certain segments of the Republican party. Every major speaker, from Gov. Edmund G. Brown of Cali fornia In Senate Majority Whip Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, exhorted the virtues of the Ken nedy administration and -warned of the impending dangers powered by the "radical right wing." Humphrey accused , Goldwater of "waltzing with the Birchers" and Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall said the potential Republi can presidential candidate "lacked the maturity" necessary to lead the United States. Brown used most of his time to set the stage for Humplirey and Udall to hit at Goldwater by starting the ball rolling with his attack against the "radical right.' Brown called on Democrats to fight Birch Sotiety members "for what they are warmongers, hate mongers and apostles of non-think."
