Farm Groups Oppose Shipments To Russia WASHINGTON (UP1) The American Farm Bureau Federa tion and the National Grange, the nation's two largest farm organi zations, said today they were op posed at present to exports of! government-subsidized wheat to the Soviet Union. Spokesmen for the two groups added, however, that the issue of possible wheat sales to Russia w ill be reviewed by Farm Bureau and Grange members this fall. Under present regulations, ex ports of subsidized crops to Rus sia is not permitted. And, at pres ent, all wheat exports arc subsi dized with government payments covering the gap between the American support price and the lower world market price. Russia's' recent purchases of wheat from Canada and Australia have produced speculation about possible sales of American wheat to the Soviet Union. Some congressmen from wheat states have called for a change in government policy to allow for such sales at the same subsidized export price used on all foreign Liz And Burton Take Long Way PARIS (UPI) Elizabeth Tay lor and Richard Burton taking the long way to Mexico, turned up! in Pans today. They checked into a Paris hotel after arriving from Switzerland but were not available for com ment on why llicy came here They went to the Swiss town of Gstaad last week from London, after telling fr iends they were go ing straight to Mexico. Burton, accompanied by Miss Taylor, is scheduled to go to Mex ico to make a film. They are be lieved to be planning to go via Canada. sales of American wheat. In a related development, the State Department disclosed Fri day that Poland has expressed in terest in entering into a new agreement for purchase of U. S. wheat. Last year Poland imported ap-; proximately 2.5 million tons ofj grain, about 1 million tons of it from the United States, and Pol ish sources have indicated the country's annual grain deficit is still about the same. Poland and Yugoslavia are exempt from the U. S. wheat export restrictions that apply to other Soviet block nations. Grain Crop Badly Hurt By Drought MOSCOW (UPI) Drought has severely cut back this year s So viet grain harvest, forcing Rus sia to import more wheat than at any time since World War II, Western farm experts said. Even in Ihe North Caucasus, where the Russians claim record harvests of grain, the crop did not measure up to expectations due to lack of rain in July and August. Foreign newsmen who visited the Kuban River area of the North Caucasus reported Friday night thai his traditionally rich farm area had a poor corn har vest and good but not outstand ing wheal yields. Pope Plans To Overhaul Curia VATICAN CITY lUPH - In another move aimed at stream lining the Roman Catholic Church for space age. Pope Paul VI Sat urday announced plans for over hauling the Roman Curia to place more policy-making power in the hands of the local clergy at the diocese level. The proposal, the pontiff said will be discussed at' the second session of the Ecumenical Council opening Sept. 29. The curia is composed of agen cies which the pontiff uses in the exercise of his supreme and uni versal power over the Catholic church. It may be likened to the cabinet of a president or prime minister. ' To Be International Pone Paul told curia members Saturday he intends to make it more international m membership and more progressive in outlook "Various reforms will be need ed." the Pope said in a special audience with members of the curia's various departments. 'They will certainly be ponder ed, they will be outlined accord ing to the needs and times oi the other." The purpose of the reforms, the pontiff declared, is to drop what is passing or superfluous in the forms and norms that govern the Roman Curia and to bring about what is vital and providential. . Continues Progressive Moves Vatican sources interpreted the papal statement as another pro gressive step in line with the late Pope John XXIIl's Ecumenical Council, the second council scs sion called by Pope Paul and both pontiff's efforts to unify the. churches of Christendom tnrougn- out the world. The curia has been the strong hold of Catholic conservatives for centuries. Because of its power as Rome's controlling agency, the curia dictates administrative poll cies for the Catholic Church ev erywhere. The proposed updating of the curia could mean far - reaching changes in church administration. Sfudents Die In Accident BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI) Al car rammed into a group of Lou isiana Slate University students pushing a stalled auto near the campus Friday night, killing live of them and injuring at least six other persons. State police identified the dead as John W. Olvey, Gordon John son Jr., Buddy Burge, Willie Ramhin and Alexandria King. Olvey was reported to be from Shreveport, La., and Miss King from New Orleans. All were stu denls at LSU and in their late teens or early twenties. The names of the injured and hometowns of the other victims were not immediately available. Highway patrolmen said the driver of (he car apparently did not see the students in time There were no lights on the stalled vehicle, an old model sta tion wagon. Japanese Embassy Tells Of Threats In Formosa TAIPEI, Formosa UPP - The Japanese Embassy has received at least two anonymous bomb threats from "patriotic Chinese youths" in the past two days diplomatic sources said today. The sources said Ambassador Hiroshigi Kimuia has ordered his slaff to cancel all social contacts with Chinese here for the dura tion of the current crisis in rela tions. The bomb threats added new tension to the already troubled situation here, in which Kimura's house and the Japan Airlines of fice have been stoned. A storm of protest began sweeping Formosa three weeks ago when tile Japanese govern ment approved sale of a $20-mil-lion fabric plant to Red China. The sending of a Japanese trade delegation to Peking and a slatcment by Japanese Premier Hayalo Ikeda saying the oft-stated Nationalist Chinese threat to return to the mainland was wish ful thinking added fuel to the fire. Nationalist Ambassador to Ja pan Chang li-Sheng was called home for "consultations" today. The threatening letters were delivered directly to the embas sy here. One accused the Japa nese people of being unapprccia- tive of the Chinese government's "magnanimity" toward Japan at the end of (he Second World War. If the Germans buy 100 more of them, it will mean a considerable cost saving to Paris. So far. according to the Ger man Defense Ministry, only the Transall is even being consid ered. But Lockheed representatives are scurrying around Germany trying to whip up enthusiasm for their "Hercules." They have mailed batches of printed materi al to parliamentary deputies, con tacted a number of reporters, and placed large advertisements with most technical magazines. But Lockheed has been unable to show its entry officially to either the Parliament or the De fense Ministry. The American company's acti vity however, lias been enough to anger ' the French, according to stories appearing in some Paris newspapers. Cabinet Out In 4 Weeks OSLO (UPI i Norway's first non-socialist government in 28 years resigned Saturday, only four weeks after it took office. Conservative Prime Minister John Lyng, defeated Friday night in his first important parliamen tary vole, handed his cabincl's resignation to King Olav V. The King asked Lyng to carry on in a caretaker capacity, but called on former I.abor Party Premier Einar Gcrhardsen whose government fell four weeks ago to form a new cabinet. Gcrhardsen was expected to be sworn in as the new premier next Wednesday, just one month and; (wo days after he left the office ! But informed sources said some members might be dropped from Gcrhardsen's previous cabinet. including former U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie. Police arrested the Yugoslav refugee Friday at his two room apartment near the Champs Ely- sec hut said his mistress, pretty dark-haired 25-ycar - old Marie Luce, was still at large. Franusik's janitor alerted po lice Friday afternoon after he saw Ihe paintings through the partially open door of the apart ment where he had gone to an swer a complaint about water leaking. Police said they had walched he house painlcr for more than i year but had not acted until now as they were stymied by his refusal lo use the loot to better his slyle of living.
