Wife Offers
Sloppy Husband
Tax Referral Election Will Cost State Between $250,000 And $275,000
' t : By ANN LANDERS
. Dear Ann landers: Please
print this letter for the woman
who started herself, "Gypsy." She
is tne nen wia-
i ow wno is iry-
mg to buy a
husband, one
says she is mis-
erable and lone
ly and her mon
ey is not bring
ing her happi-
ness. She wants
a tiusband and is willing to pay
fof one.
Well, Gypsy, you can have my
lummox if you will pay for the
divorce. He is exactly what you
are looking for. Ed is in his mid
dle 50s, nice looking, enjoys a
good time and would just love
to relax and lei somebody sup
port him.
Maybe for you, Gypsy, he would
bathe and shave and get dressed
up once in a while. For me he
figures it's good enough to look
like a bum. And you would never
be. lonesome with Ed around be
cause all he does is talk talk talk
talk talk. But don't try to say
anything, because his opinions are
thfl only ones worth listening to,
Let me know if you want him
I'll send the jerk C.O.D.-MRS,
HAD IT
Dear Mrs. II: Sorry, but when
I checked with the postal authori
ties recently I learned it Is
against the law to send dead
dogs In the mall. The same rules
apply to fifth rate husbands,
ttcar Ann Landers: My hus
band's oldest sister was wid
owed seven years ago. Her chil
dren are grown and she has a
beautiful home, a nice Income
and a complete life. She has been
the head of numerous important
charity drives in the communi-
ty and she is considered socially
prominent. i
We just learned'that she is se-
nqus about marrying a man who
clerks in a department store.
They've been keeping steady com
pany for several months but we
never dreamed It would blossom
info anything like marriage. To
say we are shocked is putting it
mildly.
This man is very ordinary in
looks and his personality is noth
ing to write home about. If my
sister-in-law marries him It will
certainly damage her socially and
she will be dropped by some of
her belter friends. I don't think
she sees how this marriage will
change her life totally.
Please print this letter. She
needs your advice badly.
LAKE FOREST
Dear Lake: She didn't ask for
my advice and I'll bet she didn't
ask for yours either.
You are right when you say
this marriage might change her
life. It could change it for the
better. So why don't you get busy
with a charity drive yourself,
Toots? I don't think you have
enough to do.
Dear Ann Landers: I'm 16 years
old, no great beauty but I'm not
what you'd call ugly either. I've
got a nice figure, look well in my
clothes and I'm neat. I'd give
anylhing if I could be popular
with boys, but I guess I never
will be because I don't know how
My girl friend has fellows run
ning after her all the time. I
can't figure out how she does it.
She isn't beautiful in fact, she';
far from it, but she has a way
with fellows that really clicks,
She gets three or four phone calls
every night. Boys ask her to help
them with school work, although
she almost flunked math and
science. They flock around her
after class and date her up for
school parties months hi advance
Why does she succeed with
what seems like no effort? And
why do I fail when I try
hard? MISS BLAH
Dear Miss: The prettiest girl
has no lock on popularity and
neither docs the brainiest. Your
friend has learned how to make
boys .comfortable. .They .enjoy
themselves when they are with
her. She Is both interesting and
interested. Listen to her and
watch her when she Is with boys.
You'll Icam something.

SALEM (UPD-U will cost Ore
gon taxpayers from 75 cents to
$1 a vote to determine the future
of the $60 million state income
tax increase measure at the Oct.
IS special election.
Estimates are that between
300,000 and 350,000 persons will
vote.
Secretary of State Howell Ap
pling Jr. estimates the election
will cost between $250,000 and
$275,000. The legislature set a
a $300,000 limit on the cost.
Normally, counties pay about 80
per cent of the cost of elections
and the stale about 20 per cent
But because the legislature set
aside a special date for the tax
referendum vote, it has to pay
the full cost.
Present estimates are $2,275 for
election supplies, $7,200 for offi
cial and sample ballots, $156,480
for s a 1 a r i e s for election board
iworkers. $18,000 for rental of pol
ling places, $13,000 for printing of
the voters' pamphlet, $7,200 for
postage, and $5,500 for addressing
and mailing of voters' pamphlets.
In addition ti this $209,555. there
will be the cost of transporting
lother miscellaneous charges that
could add $50,000 or $60,000 to the
base estimate.
ADDling alrnarlv has notified
county clerks of procedures to be
toliowed, and outlined what the
state will and will not pay.

election workers and supplies, andl He said he would demand re
ceipts or certified statements of i
expenses from the counties.
Because the law requires a pre
cinct for every 500 registered vot
ers, and does not allow consolida
tion of precincts in special elec
tions there will be 3,266 precincts
in operation.

HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Falls, Oregon
Thursday, September 19, 1863
When estimates of the election
cost were submitted to the legis
lature this spring, a 16-page vot
ers' pamphlet costing $11,226 was
envisioned.
Because the tax law is so long,
the pamphlet will be 82 pages.
By changing the format of the
booklet, and having It glued in
stead of stitched, cost of the
larger book was held to $130,000,
By juggling the number of pre
cinct workers, Appling was able
to shave $70,600 off the estimated
$227,080 for salaries of election
board workers. Instead of having
five workers, who get paid $1 an;
hour, working 14 hours, Appling
has authorized three clerks for the
daytime, with a fourth to come in
for the afternoon voting peak and
vote counting period.
This saves us about $22 for
each of the 3,260 precincts in the
state," Appling said.
He said because there Is only
one issue on the ballot that voting
will be quick, and "the results
should be in early in the eve
ning." -
