For the past several years the local chamber has sought to have the message on the billboard at the junction of U.S. Highways 97 and 99 changed from "Klam ath Falls via VS. 97" to "Port land via Klamath Falls, U.S. 97." Another sign at the same loca tion directed traffic to Portland via U.S. 99. The three school boards had agreed to divide the county into two districts using the Klamath Union High School boundary as the dividing line. But the county court adopted the Wiard Street dividing line plan. Two Autos Collide With Deer No one came out ahead early Saturday morning when two deer tangled almost simultaneously with two cars driven by Klamath Falls motorists on Highway 39. The Oregon State Patrol said Gary Duane Say, 765S Hilyard Avenue, was driving south on No. 39 in his l?0 Thunderbird at 1:50 a.m. when he struck a deer head- on. The collision caused the car to swerve back and forth, but the vehicle did not leave the road. Leland Floyd DeLap, Route 2, Box 613B, was following Say in a 1953 Chevrolet, and he struck a second deer at almost the same time. DeLap's vehicle went onto the shoulder, but remained up right. Neither driver was injured, the patrol said. Damage to both cars was reported as not too heavy, al though the vehicles had to be towed away. Both deer were killed by the impacts. Crash Kills Ex-Resident A former resident of the Klam ath Basin, Mary Lynn Day, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Day of Healdsburg, Calif., was killed in a train-car accident at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in Healdsburg. Miss Day was a former resident of Malin. She attended Malm schools for six years. At the time of her death she was attending Santa Rosa Junior College. Funeral services will be held at the Fred Young Mortuary in Healdsburg at 2 p.m. Monday. Survivors include her fiaronts; a sister, Terry Jean Day; two broth ers. David and James; grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. V. H. Dabney and S. W. Ellis, all of Klamath Falls; two uncles, Tom Dean Klamath Falls, and Tobcrt Ellis of New Orleans, La. 68 Young Drivers Cited For Violations Sixty eight teen-agers were cit ed for traffic offenses in Klamath County during August and their violations resulted in five acci dents, a report from the Klam ath County Juvenile Department savs. The five accidents injured one person and caused property dam age estimated at $1,494. The 6a juveniles collected a total of 78 citations. Thirty nine of the citations were handed out by Oregon State Police. 34 by Klamath Falls Police and five by other agencies. The 70 citations brought the year's total for juveniles to 452. Thirteen of the 78 tickets were issued for speeding and 13 weie given for not having a proper operator license. Firemen Answer Pair Of Calls Klamath Falls firemen were called out Saturday afternoon at 4:29 to Eighth and Prospect to extinguish a grass fire. There was no damage reported. Firmen also answered a call Friday night at 9:37 to 435 High Street where a television set had shorted out. There was smoke damage at the residence, occu pied by Teresa Doveri. BRAZIL BITS WHEAT WASHINGTON UPI - Bra zil has purchased $94.4 million worth of wheat and wheat flour under the Food for Peace pro gram. The Agriculture Department said Friday that Brazil would pay for the commodities in its own currency, 30 per cent of which will be set aside for U. S. uses, the remainder lo be avail able for economic development loans and grants. In August 18 auto accidents so far this yea. which caused a total of S5.423 in damages. Hunting Outlook Bright Due To Improved Hatch Tule Lake and Lower Klamath waterfowl populations are increas ing rapidly as migrant ducks and ccese arrive daily from the northern breeding grounds. Early migrant geese are mostly white fronted ccese. commonly known as "specks"; while early arriving ducks are predominately pintails and mallards. Hunting prospects are consider ably brighter this year with the improved waterfowl hatch on Ba sin refuses and on the northern breeding grounds. With waterfowl continuing to arrive daily in in creasing numbers, it is expected that Basin refuge waterfowl popu lations will be at high levels for the hunting season opening at 1 p.m. Daylight Savings Time, Oct. While below normal tempera- lures in July and August prevent ed botulism from developing ear lier, the recent warming trend has favored the production of the bac terium. Clostridium botulinum. Type C, which produces material toxic to birds. Substantial losses began on Lower Klamath Refuge Sept. 2 and 3. While sick and dead birds have been lound on Tule Lake, losses have not been heavy. Since the early September outbreak, three airboat crews have picked up approximately 5.(100 dead and 2.000 sick birds. Sick birds picked up are moved to the refuge "duck hospital where they are given an injection of bolu lism anti-toxin and provided with fresh water and food until they have recovered sufficiently to re turn to the wild.
