For Children NEW YORK (UPI) -FamUies . traveling together should not nec essarily stay together, says Seena Hamilton, who runs an unusual tour service. "I know horn experience," said Miss Hamilton, who in private life is the wife of Dr. Sam Fine- berg, a prominent New York physician. "My husband and I spent two weeks this summer just showing our boy the West. One day we did a four-iliour mule trip up a 7,000 foot mountain, hiked five miles, had a picnic. ..by this time my husband and I were bushed. A Child's Pace "But Bryan (aged 8) was still going strong. If you can keep a child moving 10 hours a day, you won't have any whining. But what parent can keep that pace. "I don't believe in turning a child over to someone else all the time," said the career woman who's in her 30's. 'Tart of the fun of traveling with children is sharing experiences. But parent and child need some relief from one another." Miss Hamilton is founder and boss of Gulliver's Trails, which since July, 1980, has been showing children of New York and visitors the sights of the big city. Its motto is, "You take the holiday, we'll take the kids." Now, she has franchised similar tour services in Montreal and Philadelphia and has expanded the New York op eration to include tours for teen agers. Art and Diplomats In the three years in New York, she figures that she and her staff of counselors have shepherded 10,000 children through the city's attractions ranging from Coney Island and Chinatown to the Met ropolitan Museum of Art, the stock exchange and the United Nations. The day I talked with her she was catching her breath after the American Hospital Association's LITTLE PEOPLE'S PUZZLE pip 5 jp' J 7ACR0PC Jpt own ftq If W I ItXOCAU WO. -'J A3XNO0 "9 'oOiDVm '1J3HM ONW331S ' I UMOa Anlwgr 1a tVBvlous Punl 10 Epochal 11 Merit 16 Egyptian god 20 Landmark 22 Banquet 24 Famous csrtoonist 25 Does (Asia) 40 Grater 43 Graceful behaviors 45 Confederate statesman 46 Twain 47 Erse battle cry 48 Eager (dial.) 0 Famoua musician 51 Indian 52 Split 65 Mark in curling 26 Palsy 28 Pronoun 30 Exploit 31 Scraps 33 Wrapped (or burial 35 Wild sheep (sport) annual convention, she set up tours lor children of the conven tioneers, and some days as many as ZOO youngsters registered, Counselors guided groups of no more than 12 on daytime sight seeing, eight on evening tours which were mostly for the leen set. "Taking the whole family to a convention is the thing now," said Miss Hamilton. "And I know sev eral conventions deliberately held off until the world's fair next year." Free Exhibits "But I'm worried they (the management) aren't making plans for the children," she said, and I know from experience you can't get a child to watch a free ex hibit when something's being sold on the next corner. Her specialized service grew from her own experiences as a reporter for hotel and resort pub lications. The job meant much travel, frequently with her son along because he couldn't be left! home alone. And her husband was at his office or affiliated hospitals each day. "Our son was only two months old when I took him on his first trip," she recalled. "It was a short one, but I was the only per son hi the group w hose luggage in cluded a diaper supply. He's been traveling ever since." Civil War Claim Sought SALEM (UPD The Oregon and California attorneys general will confer in October on the two states' claims for nearly $8 mil lion from the federal government to repay them for maintaining troops during the Civil War. Atty. Gen. Robert Y. My mother is a very nice person but she i is not a very ; good barber, She cuts my hair and my little brother's, too, and she does a lousy job of it. For a week after a haircut, I am ashamed to leave the house. AU the guys in the neighborhood ask me when I am coins to the electric chair I have told my dad now i leel about this but he says haircuts by barbers cost a lot of money and we can't afford it. He also savs my hair grows like a weed and I'd have to go every other week. Is there a solution to my prob. lem? Or do I just have to suf fer with it until 1 am old enough to earn some money so I can buy haircuts on my own? SHAVED RAT Dear S.R.: Ask your dad if he will take you to a barber college. The i prices are cheap there be. cause students do the cutting. The price of haircuts ts no joke these days. But they haven'l gone up any more than most other commodities and scrv ices. It just seems that way tp us old fogies who remember when a shave and a haircut was two-bus. Dear Ann Landers: Our daugh ter who is 17 invited a college roommate whom I will call Hel ena to spend two weeks with us It s too late to do anything about this guest but I am writing to set tle a few questions for next time Our daughter feels that since Helena has grown up in great wealth, and is accustomed to hav ing servants wait on her hand and foot, she should not have been ex pected to do any housework while she was a guest in our home. Our own daughter pressed Hel ena's dresses and picked up after her. It annoyed me when Helena would gab on the phone by the hour while our daughter made both their beds and served her guest coffee presumably to give her strength to hang on the phone for another hour. We lust put Helena on the plane and our daughter and I had a long discussion. She feels she was a perfect hostess" and that I am wrong to criticize her lor cater ing to the girl, we would like your opinion. MMM Dear MMM: The guest sounds thoroughly spoiled and ungraci ous. A lady does not make a servant out of her hostess. Since your daughter cheerfully played handmaiden to her friend however, I see no reason (or you to criticize her. This was strictly between them. If you had been left with the extra work I'd have offered vastly different advice. Dear Ann Landers: Maybe you or some of your readers can help me. I am a woman past 40, nev er married, and have kept myself busy and content with a multitude of interests. About three years ago a close male relative for whom I've al ways had a great deal of affection and respect, started to keep com pany with a girl 20 years nis junior. These two have been car- doc and Umatilla Indian wars. California Atty. Gen. Stanley Mosk said his state's $7.5 million claim also had not been paid. The money was used by the states to recruit and maintain troops on Indian patrol duty dur ing the war, and was spent alter the federal government assured it would be repaid. Senator Knocks Seat Belt Price EUGENE (UPI) - Sen. Ed Fa- dcley. Seat belts will be required in all new autos sold in Oregon after Jan. 1 of next year. SAVED BY THE BELL JACKSON, Miss. fUPI Charles Ray Morgan, 23, was un dergoing a final physical exam ination for induction into the Army Tuesday when a sergeant pulled him out of the line of draftees. You don't go, you're mar ried," the sergeant told Morgan, a husband of eight months dura tion, and cited President Kcnne day's order exempting married men from the draft. "That's saved by the.bell, isn't it?" Morgan said. How do people deal with an ugly affair which reflects dis honor on the whole family? 1 need an answer. LIBRA uear Libra: you say you've kepi yourself busy with a multl tude of interests. Perhaps you have not kept yourself busy enough. It's always sad when people whom we admire and respect dis appoint us, but a mature indi vidual does not allow himself to become unglued because others do not live up to his standards.
