DEAR POLLY My hint is fortliat if one fails to plan ahead, it if those who like to sew. When there ate scams to be pressed, especial lv in wool, and you do not have a sleeve board, a rolling pin wrapped in a clean dish towel works beautifully. This would also work for pressing suit sleeves where a crease is not wanted. M. C. GIRLS Fasten the towel on the rolling pin with a rubber band at the top and one at the bottom. When sleeves are large, try a terry cloth hand lowcl around the rolling pin. POLLY DEAR POLLX-I like to tidy my living room at night before retiring. Instead of dumping all the cigarette butts into one large ashtray. I empty the ashtrays into an empty tin coffee can with a lid. Put the lid on tight and the butts will not burn without oxy gen. As an added precaution put some water into the can. Now I go lo bed with no fear of a fire starting in the trash can. MRS. J. F. GIRLS As you go around emp tying the ashtrays, carry a damp paper towel to wipe out the ash trays so they are passably clean tintil you get around to washing them. POLLY DEAR POLLY When I need to leave a note for our milkman, I cut paper in the shape of i capital T. about l'i inches wide The length is the height of the bottle and I crease it down the center, write my order at the top and put into an empty bottle. Several can be tut at one time Never a nole lost! M. M. H. DEAR POLLY-When packing mv cosmetics for traveling, I fill and label plastic prescription bot tles with the needed hand lotion, cleansing cream, powder, astrin onl, etc. from my large economy size packages. This not only prevents breakage and spillage but narrows everything down to a compact size. ANOTHER POLLY GIRLS This would certainly help solve the weight problem when traveling by air. POLLY DEAR POLLY We are living in such an era of mass gift giving can become a very costly and ex hausting chore. You girls who sew can turn out, at a nominal cost, many delightful and useful gilts' I use my zigzag machine for mak ing so many gifts. Monogrammed linens (appliqued or machine si itched I are attractive, personal gifts for brides or even the grad uates. Monogrammed towel sets and handkerchiefs with hand em broidered initial or signature make inexpensive and lovely gifts. Stuffed animals and toys are quick and easy to make for baby girts. UPI Telephoto Bees Keep Fair Buzzing SALEM (UPD - The natural resources building at the Oregon State Fair was buzzing with ex citement Wednesday night when a playful youngster hrJke a glass cover an'! allowed a mass of an- honey bees to lake over the structure. As the thousands of bees roared from their container, spectators fled the building. Diners at a nearby food conces sion left their food and ran. Officials locked the building. and Wednesday morning a bee keeper was able to swarm the buzzing insects together. At last report the bees, still not back in their container, were con tentedly gathered near the rab bit section, and the building was open again to visitors. A witness said she heard a wom an shout to her son, "Oh. don't don't." then heard the crinkle of breaking glass. Southern Belles Continue Sweep Of Beauty Pageant 1 remove ribbons from gifts that arrive at our house and add them to our gift wrapping box. Also I use pretty shelf paper for wrap ping and find I save money. Since starting to plan ahead. gift giving is no longer a chore to me or such a strain on the budget. It is now a real pleasure and I save money, too. MRS. V. J. GIRLS It Is amazing what pretty gifts can be assembled with some bits of material and 10 nimble fingers. Granny Perches On State Capitol Steps Seeking Increase In Welfare Benefits : OLYMP1A (I'Pll - "I have a blanket which keeps me warm, and if it rains I'll go back under the eaves like the pigeons." Mrs. Peggy Goodman, a 59- year-old grandmother from Seat lie, said she planned to sit on the Stale Capitol steps rain or shine, day and night, until Gov. Albert D. Rosellini calls a special session of the legislature to in crease welfare benefits. Mrs. Goodman, who is confined to a wheelchair, said she was fighting for all of the state's re cipients of public assistance. Mrs. Goodman, who finished her second night out this morning, in sisted that she was perfectly com- lortablc. "But one thing I could use is a vacuum bottle so I could get some hot black coffee at night." Mrs. Goodman has been kept supplied with food by state em ployes and other passersby. The food, mostly hamburgers. pie and coffee from the Capitol cafeteria, is brought to her. Mrs. Goodman won t leave the steps to go after it. What happens if the food sup ply stops? Mrs. Goodman said she would face that possibility when the time came. "I didn't come here with the intention of getting handouts but everyone has been so good to me. It wouldn't be polite to rclusc." Mrs. Goodman wore a light summer dress but she had sev eral sweaters and her blanket. She said she got only about an hour and a half of sleep Wednes day night, the first night of her sit-on. Mrs. Goodman immediately be came something of a tourist at traction. Told she was famous, she replied: "I don't want all of this pub licity, but I think it is the only way to get the job done. I know this is what it takes to get re sults. Rosellini said he was sorry for Mrs. Goodman but he did not plan to call a special session of the legislature. "She will be there a long time if she stays on the steps until the lawmakers convene," Rosellini said. Mrs. Goodman said she wanted the legislature to provide funds to restore a 12 per cent reduction in state welfare payments. Mrs. Goodman emphasized that her dispute was with the legisla ture and not with the governor. He has done all he can." she said. "But the legislators should be spanked."
