By United Press International About the only question left in the National League pennant race is whether Curt Simmons and the St. Louis Cardinals can beat the clock. In one sense, both already have turned back the clock Simmons with pitching performances that recall his starring days of the 1950s and the Cardinals with a whirlwind finish reminiscent of those which reaped them World Series glory in the days of the old Gashouse Gang. The kev remaining question is whether the clock of the National league schedule will run out on (hem before their fast finishes can overtake the front-running Los Angeles Dodgers. It's a day-to-day proposition. The Cardinals can only go on win ning and hoping. Winning each game from day to day and hop ing that the Dodgers will fade be fore time runs out and the Red birds are dead birds.
