He owns one rear-engined Corvette racer which he takes around to Southern California club meets and he is building a Masarati which he hopes will compete in Grand Prix events. "Auto racing is my first love,' Blocker says. "But my contract with NBC forbids me to race 'em. The next best thing is to oun the cars and have someone else drive them for me." Though Blocker appears to be easy going, he is a hard-working star who has spent much of the past four years gom? out on per sonal appearance tours which have swelled the family coffers considerably. "I'm going to stop making so many personal appearances, Blocker says, "it lakes too much time away from my family." Blocker was a football star In college Sul Ross College in West Texas and coached the pigskin sport during his years as a teacher. "Nothing frustrates me so much as watching a football game from the stands," he says. "I'm a terrible Monday morning quar terback. And I sit up there want ing to got out on ths field and tackle a few guys myself." Oldest Copy CAIRO (UPI) What is be lieved to be the oldest copy ever found of Islam's holy book, the Koran, has been discovered here bv chance. It is a book of about 10,000 pages, handwritten in Kufi let ters on parchment made of deer skin. It is more than 1,200 years old, according to Isamologists who believe it belonged to Osman, one of prophet Mohammed's four closest disciples and third Khalif in tlie history of Islam. The holy book was found inside a metal container estimated to be 800 years old, hidden in the ancient Maghreb Rouak (home) near Al-Azhar Islamic University. Beside it was a 1,000-bead rosary. The Maghreb Rouak was built (100 years ago to house Al-Azhar students from Arab Maghreb, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Al geria. The ancient Koran was found when a complete inventory of the library was made in a new gov ernment drive to catalogue all antiquities and reference books in the country. Nowhere is the cult of the personality so important as in television where a Vince Edwards, Jim Arness or Dick Van Dyke can flash out of nowhere to instant stardom. Public infatuation with the likes of Richard Chamberlain and E. G Marshall can make or break a television show. Without an at tractive star (almost always a male) a series is doomed. He needn't be particularly handsome, nor even especially talented. Next month viewers will be introduced to a new pack of lead ing men in a horde of brand new series. And the networks, sponsors and agencies are holding their Hootenanny Gains Popularity On TV NEW YORK (UPD -Thus far! this has been the year of surf music, gospel singing and the hootenanny. At this point, primarily because of television exposure, the hooten anny seems to have the edge in popularity. As everyone knows, the hooten anny is sort of a high class hoe- down, with the elite gathering to strum, plunk and sing for the benefit of an audience of folk song aficianados, incipient beat niks and indolent college students One of the best of the many re cordings now available is "The Original Hootenanny" (Crestvicw CRV-806), particularly because it features The Limchters singing "If I Had a Hammer ' long be fore they became famous.
