Taylor of 3704 Emerald Street went deep sea fishing at Gold Beach Aug. 25 and brought back these two Chinook Salmon. They both were caught within 10 minutes of each other. The big one weighed out at 35 pounds and the small one at 24 pounds. Speedy Scot Wins At Hambletonian DU QUOIN'. III. i L'PI ' Speedy Scot won the Hamblelonian as expected, but it wasn't easy, and the bifi bay colt had to break a l.Vycar-old speed record of his Kianddaddy to chalk up the tri umph. The classic trotter from Castle ton Farm came from behind to win the 2nd and 3rd heats of the $115,549 stake in 1:58 and 1:58 2-5. and posted a total clocking ol 5:54 to better the ail-bge record for three heats divided, 5:58 1-5 Veterans Released By Clubs By United Press International Bobby Walston and George Shaw, two former stars who were attempting comebacks, to day joined pro football's grow ing "army of the unemployed.' Walston. 34. the second highest scorer in .National League history. asked for and received his release from the Boston Patriots of the American League. Shaw, considered ovor the hill as a pro quarterback at the age of 30. was placed on the waiver list hv tile Denver Bron cos of the AF'L. Walston retired last year alter a brilliant 12-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles during which he served as a standout pass catcher, field goal kicker and point-after specialist. He reconsid ered in June and was signed as a dee agent by the Patriots. This time, though. Walston is planning to retire for good. "If I thought 1 could help the Patriots. I would play the sea son." he said. "But the way the team shaies up now 1 wouldn't ligure prominently in their plans." Shaw played with three NKL teams the Baltimore Colts, the .New York Giants and the Minne sola Vikings before joining the Broncos last year. The former Oregon star enjoyed a great rook-: ie year with the Colts in 1955 and later wound up playing second lidrlle behind Johnny L'nitas. His 1:58 2-5 clocking in the deciding heat equalled the urevi ous Hambletonian record set by victorious Harlan Dean in lillil. Speedy Scot and Florlis actual ly made the race a two-horse con test, before a record crowd of 41,080. even though 14 started and 11 remained for the 3rd heat. All Three Close In the first heat Florlis. starl ing from post position 3. never was far out of contention and nipped Speedy Scot by a head in Ihe stretch drive. In the second Speedy Scot moved in front at the head of the stren-h lo cross under the wire a length ahead of Florlis, and in the third heat Florlis by three quarters of a length. Speedy Scot won his sixth and seventh races in nine starts this year to earn first money of $50,. tint, increasing his lifetime earn ings to S23B.7I0. For 35 innings the leaders of the Pacific Coast League's North ern Division couldn't score a run. But Wednesday night at San Diego, Dick Berardino finally broke the ice with a solo home- run in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, John Wer- has got the homer bug and lofted one out of the park with two mates aboard to hand San Diego costly, 4-1. setback. Had the Padres won they would have been just two games out of first place in the Southern Division because Dallas-Ft. Worth whipped Okla homa City, 4-2, in 11 innings. In other games Portland shut out Denver, 5 0; Tacoma downed Seattle. 8-3. and Salt Lake City and Hawaii split a twin bill, the Bees winning the first. 2-1, and losing the nightcap, 6-4. A crowd of 10.028 was on hand in San Diego but Joe Moeller was just too much, although Deron Johnson got his 33rd home run in the fourth. Jesus Alou set a Tacoma team Doug Olsen Is Upset In Tourney TUALATIN i UPI '-Washington high school golf champion Gary Henderson of Seattle is the new favorite in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association junior champion- hips. Henderson upset medalist Doug Olsen of Medford 2 and 1 in the second round Wednesday and led an advance of five Washington golfers into the quarterfinal round of eight. Henderson and Olsen were even after 14 holes, but the Seattle youth birdicd 15 and 18 and they halved 17 to close out the match. Henderson's birdie on the par 5 Kith hole came alter his drive hit a tree and bounced back into the fairway. He went on lo sink a 25-foot putt. He was .joined in the quarler inals by Steve Dunning.
