phy and Barbara Nieland did at

day pulled their car up in front

set an automobile record from
Los Angeles to New York. They

and 48 minutes, including fuel and
food stops. They averaged 59. 13
miles per hour.
The cross country run was
made at legal speed limits
the highest limit they found on
the whole southerly route was 75
miles per hour. It is supposed to
he the first run between the two
cities to he sanctioned officially,;
observed, and limed by the
United States Automobile Club
ilISAO.
The record of the run will he
submitted to the Federation
de'l'Aulomobile, Paris, the inter
national governing body for ve
hicle speed records, according
to Bill Carroll, an automotive
writer.
Carroll served as team captain
and alternate driver on the trip
which began in Los Angeles Fri
day, Aug, 23. They drove a hard
top sports - type car, American
make, and were accompanied by
a station wagon.
In all. there were eiaht in the
Iwo-vehicle croun -- the two
women drivers, Carroll, the three
drivers who took turns at the
wheel of the station wagon, and
two CSAC observers.
The schedule in each 24-hniir
lieriod gave each driver nf the
sports car four hours at the
wheel, (our hours navigating, four
hours drivins, four hours navigat
ing, and eight hours to sleep in
the station wagon.

land and Miss Murphy fold how
they figured out the problem of

served as bed for anyone off

"There was the neatest foam
rubber, upholstered bundling;
hoard you ever saw," they
laughed.
Incidentally, as a souvenir of
their trip, the men will get min
iature bundling boards "which
may lie worn in the lapel as a
sign of sulfering,"
