Football Drills Continue Coach Bob Williams continued to: put his charges through two-a-day drills Tuesday as the team worked on both offense and defense, split ting the two chores between the morning and afternoon sessions. There will be more of the same today before tomorrow's first scrimmage session at which time the first cut of the season will be made. This is in preparation for the Chicken 'n' Beans game which will be a week from Fri day (Sept. 7i and not this Friday as previously reported. The Pelicans have been going through a number of fundamen tals, conditioning drills and some ss offense and defensive tac tics. Much of the same will con-; tinue today before the scrimmage tomorrow. Nexl Tuesday will be the last of the two-a-day ses sions. School officially begins next Wednesday. Football week begins this Fri day at Klamath Union High in a process of working up more en thusiasm for the Chicken n Beans game. Thursday's scrimmage will begin at 3:30. All afternoon prac tice sessions previously have been at 5:30. The afternoon sessions will continue through Tuesday when the one-a-day drills begin at 12:30; p.m. Old Pros Getting Walking Papers As Youth Takes Over By United Press International ; Howard I Hopalong Cassady, the highest paid rookie in the Na tional Football League seven years ago, today was just one of nearly two dozen veteran players look ing for jobs. The red-haired Heisman Trophy winner of 1955, whom Woody Hayes, his coach at Ohio Stale, once called "the greatest football player I've ever seen," apparent ly lost his job with the Philadel phia Eagles to rookie back Ron Goodwin of Baylor. Roseburg Eliminated From Meet KEEXE. X. H. (UPH-11 was all over today for the Roseburg entry in the American Legion Junior World Series. Roseburg dropped its second jamc Tuesday night, by a narrow 4-3 score to Somervilte. Mass. It lest its first game to Omaha 23-9 cn Sunday. Superlative relief pitching by Ron Amenkowicz spoiled Rose burg's hopes. The Oregon team rallied for two runs in the fourth inning and had the bases loaded with no outs when he came into the game, struck out the side and held Roseburg scoreless the rest if the way. Dick Williams went the distance or Roseburg, striking out 9 and allowing 7 hits. Mike Blomberg had a home run for Roseburg in the third. In another game. Salem Keeps Hopes Up For Crown By United Press International Roy Uleason hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the tlth in ning to give the Salem Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Lewiston Tues day night and keep the Dodgers' chances of overtaking front run ning Yakima alive. With six playing dates left, the Dodgers trail Yakima by a game and a half as a result of Tues day's victory and Yakima's split of a doublcheader with Tri-City. The Tri-City nine pounded out 19 hits as they defeated Yakima 13-6 in Die opening game, while Yakima came back to take the nightcap 5-4. Both games went only seven innings. In the other action Tuesday night, Wenatchce downed Eugene 9-1 lo move to within one game of third place Lewiston. Northwest League Standings The youth-conscious Minnesota Vikings pared the most number of veterans from their ranks six. including six-year - pro tackle Frank Youso, to meet the NFL's final pre-season limit of 43. The Vikings in turn picked up two secona-year defensive tackles. Bill Wilson and George Huitz, from the St. Louis Cardinals for a fu ture draft pick. two injured Baltimore tolts veterans, defensive tackle Bill Ventura and defensive back Bob! Boyd, were placed on the injury waiver list and flanker Jake Turn er, a two-year pro, was cut. In addition to Cassady, the Eagles asked for waivers on line backer John Nocera and defen sive tackle Joe Lew is, both mem bers of last year's squad. Redskins Cut Six Veteran offensive tackle Charlie Moore and defensive back Jim Kerr were lopped by the Wash ington Redskins in addition to tour rookies. All players placed on waivers Tuesday are subject to claim by other chins within each respec tive league within 48 hours. If a player is claimed, the original has a 24-hour period in which to exercise its option of recalling him. The injury waiver list is aimed at removing an injured player from the active roster and stilt retaining him under con tract, to be reactivated later. Gary Knafelc, a nine-year vet eran end Horn tne ureen Hay Packers, signed with San Fran cisco, but the Forty Xiners cut former Chicago Bear quarterback Dick Norman, placed rookie full back Mike Lind on the injury waiver list and placed guard Tedj Connolly on the inactive reserve! list. San Francisco also claimed: back Glenn Shaw from the Losj Angeles Rams. i Trades in AFL In the American Football j League, two trades were included in the roster juggling to meet the 38-man player limit. Former All-AFL pass catching star Bill (iromart was dealt by the Houston Oilers to the Denver Broncos for two high t4 draft choices. Guard Charlie Leo was traded to the Buffalo Bills from the Boston Patriots for either a play er to be named later or the Bills' No. 8 draft choice for 1964. The Broncos cut veteran linebackers!
