Nature has been evolving dif ferent forms of life for something like three billion years. Nature itself has doomed the great ma jority of 6ecies tc extinction. But it has let about 3,500 6pecies of mammals, including man, and 8,000 species of birds survive to the present. In recent times the great extinguisher has been not nature but man. Man Ii The Villain In a symposium at the 16th in ternational congress of zoology scientists said that in 99.9 per cent of the tragedies which wipe out whole species today man is the villain. He kills off irreplaceable ani mal types either by direct slaughter or by destruction of habitats through stream pollution the felling of forests, or indis criminate use of poisons. Many of the 1,500 species of mammal in Africa are in danger. But the new African states arc trying to save some of them. There are sound economic grounds for doing so. In Africa, scientists have dis covered, wild animals properly husbanded, can provide hungry man with more protein food on marginal lands than cattle graz ing the same areas can produce. We Don't Own World In the opinion of Ian McTag flart Cowan of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, there is a far more compelling reason for trying to save species now in jeopardy. Said Cowamn: "We don't own the world. We hold a life rental on it. It is our responsibility to turn it over to our descendants in at least as good condition as when we got il, preferably better." So far man has destroyed WO mammal and more than 100 bird species. In danger arc 55 mam mal, 100 fish, 4H bird, and six reptile species. Law Breaks Up 'Happy Home' TOPPENISH, Wash. UPI -Police here' have broken up Claude E. Parks' haroy home. And for good reason. Parks' "penthouse apartment" was lo cated on tlie roof of the Toppcn ish Police Department building. Officers were tipped off Thurs day that a man was living on their roof. Upon investigation, they found Parks had set up housekeeping on the flat jailhouse roof and had furnished it with a table, rug, some blankets, a mat tress and an alarm clock. Tlicy found several bottles of wine and Parks hosting a friend, identified as Tom Duanc. Parks has a new address for the next 30 days. His police "landlords" found him better quarters a jail cell on the first floor of tlie building. He was charged with vagrancy and tics passing on city properly. Law Promotes Lower Rates WASHINGTON (UPD - Presi dent Kennedy Thursday signed bill intended to encourage lower rates for shipping lumber from Pacific Coast ports. The bill, introduced by Sen Warren G. Magnuson, D - Wash, would allow shipping lines to low er and raise rates v. ithout waiting for approval by the Federal Mari time Commission. The act exempts lumber from laws under which rates could be lowered immediately but could not be raised again without waiting period. Magnuson said the legislation was intended to help West Coast lumbermen compete with British Columbia producers who use low er-cost foreign vessels for ship ments to the U.S. East Coast. College Plans Second Dorm NEWBERG (I'PO-Tlie board of trustees of George Kox Col lege has unanimously authorized the financing of a second dormi tory at an estimated cost of 407 000 and a dining hall at a cost of gra.ooo.
