Despite tlie tensions of war.
Saigon remains one of the loveli
est cities of the Orient, a city of
smart shops, comfortable hotels
and beautiful girls bicycling in
silken trousers along tree-lined,
shaded streets.
There can be ugliness.
There is the tossed grenade in
a crowded cafe. And now there is
the tension between the Buddhist
majority and the government,
and the accompanying hideous
sight of an aged Buddhist monk
turning himself into a flaming
torch in a Saigon street.
But for sheer physical beauty
the city has few equals.
There is then an almost night
marish quality to Saigon dis
patches suggesting that the gov
ernment would reduce Saigon to
ashes tn keep itself in power
against a revolt which the presi
dent's brother and chief adviser
says he regards as "inevitable."
This brother and close adviser
of President Ngo Dinh Diem is
Ngo Dinh Nhu.

Kingsley Field base theater.
Civilians and military personnel
of the Klamath Falls area are in

Explorers Plan
Woods Carnival
The public has been invited to
the First Annual Explorer Woods
Carnival to be held Saturday at
Weyerhaeuser Park on Highway
6fi, 20 miles southwest of Klam
ath Falls.
The carnival will feature Ex
plorer Scouts competing in events
sich as trap shooting, archery, fly
casting, log biding and chopping.
The event is sponsored by Ex
plorer Post 181. and starts at 1
p.m.

This time, he says, any new 'at
tempt at a coup d'etat would be
both anti-American and anti-
Buddhist.
Charges U.S. Pressure
lime. Nhu has accused the
United States of bringing pres
sure to stop her own anti-Buddhist
statements including one
that the women of South Viet
nam should clap hands at each
new Buddhist burning.
Nhu's threat to burn the city
ignores the fact that for the gov
ernment the act would be as sui
cidal as the fiery deaths of Bud
dhist monks.
But Nhu in the past lias been
suspected of creating emergen
cies for his own purposes and
this threat could be interpreted
as a warning to the U.S. that its
own fu'ure in Southeast Asia is
inextricably tied with the future
of the authoritarian Dinh 4amily
The conflict between the Bud
dhists and tlie government has
gone on (or more than three
months and the Dinh family is
on tlie defensive. And meantime
the Communist enemy has been
tlie gainer.
This is the situation into which
Henrv Cabot Lodee Jr. moves
this week as tlie new U.S. ambassador.

two Russian fishing trawlers have
been operating on the edge of
the Pacific missile range during
test firings of missiles and satel
lite launches.

168-foot vessels carry electronic
gear and could scan missile fir

Restraining Order Fails To Halt Demonstrations

sued an order halting demonstra
tions in Plaquemine, La., but Ne
groes marched again in the ra
cially tense Mississippi River
town.
Police arrested 104 of the dem
onstrators, who set out in "task
force groups," and the day's to

were juveniles who were released
later.

was 38 degrees at Redmond, Ore.,

The Soviet government charged
in a long statement Wednesday
that the Chinese on Aug. 15 had
revealed "classified documents
and information related to tlie de
fenses of the countries of the so
cialist community."
Though the statement did not
specify the disclosures, observers
believed they included Peking's
charge that the Kremlin reneged
on promises to help build atom
bombs, and publication of com
munications between the two
states.
"There is hardly anyone who
will believe the sincerity of ils
i China's) assurances and trust it
with information of defense im
portance," tlie statement said.
"It is natural that the Soviet gov
ernment will draw its own con
clusions in this score."
