The last few columns have cov ered favorable assumptions from Marshall Miles' new book "All Fifty-two Cards." Declarer must find certain cards where he wants them, and he will make his con tract only if the cards behave nicclv. Another type assumption Is the pessimistic outlook. The contract looks easy, so you start to guard against bad breaks. Now let's see what can happen to you at five hearts. The con tract looks pretty good. You have lost the opening spade but can ruff vour other spade and it trumps break favorably you will make an overlrick. You also have no worries about a'J-1 trump break. You will only make five odd if you don't pick up the queen, but five is all you have bid. How about four trumps in one hand. East almost surely won't hold them, but maybe West will. Can you do anything about this Yes, you can. You win East's club lead with your queen and lead a heart. Then you finesse dummy's jack. If the finesse loses you will still make your contract. Actually it wins, but East shows out. Now you cash the king of hearts, get back to your hand with a diamond, ruff your last spade, and lose a trump trick in the cool of the eve ning. Suppose that East had led a spade at trick two? You should ruff in dummy, return to your hand with cluub or diamond, and take the heart finesse just the same in orcr to guard against that bad trump break. Not since his wife, Sue, placed the ring on his finger during their wedding ceremony in Tl juana 22 years ago has the actor been without it. "In one of my first movies I showed up for work the first day and the director told me I'd have to take off (he ring," Ladd grinned. "I told him to forget it "There was an impasse for a while, then one of the prop men came tip with the idea of making a clamp-like ring to fit right over my wedding band. It was a big Indian head ring that hid my own ring completely." Since then Ladd has had variety of clamps made at the expense of the studios, naturally to cover his wedaed status. He has a box full of them Western rings,, signets, college rings, rings with big stones, and rings bearing the emblems of West Point, the Navy and the Air Force. In his role of Nevada Smith for "The Carpetbaggers" Ladd is light back where he started, wearing an Indian head ring. "I guess I'm just superstitious about it," he said, "but it's the only superstitition I have. And tliese clamp rings are kind of a conversation piece now.
