Wednesday, August 21, HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath FalU, Oregon 1963 Audio Techniques Noted To Improve Home Films By PRESTON McGRAW ' lulled Press International An audio consultant says home movies can be instantly improved by adding sound with high fidel ity equipment and a (ape record' er. The equipment required is sound projector with microphone, recorder head, phonograph con nector cord, amplifier and speak er. And the film has to be sent to a laboratory to be magnetical lv strioed and processed. But by usine a home audio center to add sound to film, you can avoid trouble and disappoint ment, according to audio consult ant Eueene Carrington. Carrington is audio consultant for Allied Radio Corp., world's largest high fidelity distributor. "Sound projectors are equipped Oil Brings Hew Era To Valley EL CENTRO, Calif. (UPf) In the 18th Century the Spanish conquistador Juan Bautista De Anza called it Jordana del Mu erta the journey of the dead. A century later, Uie desert wasteland between the Colorado River and the distant Pacific had claimed its toll in the bleached bones of many a Forty-Niner. With the arrival of Colorado River water in 1901, a group of hardy pioneers started transofrm ing the desert into what the Im perial Valley Is today a vast expanse of irrigated larms ana ranches where crops and cattle thrive on a scale unparalleled in the southwestern United itates. Now. Southern California's Im- peria' Valley stands on the threshhold of another era of de velopment oil and minerals. Matter Of Conjecture The presence of oil under the valley has long been a matter of conjecture among the fanners and ranchers but it has only been in recent months that long years of exoloration by a small num ber of Independent oilmen have benun to bear fruit. A leader in this field Is Al Van Hulsen. president of Sard! Oil Company from Redondo Beach, Calif. Van Hulsen, who was bitten by the oil bug in his native Michi gan and has been In the valley since 1953, described tne area as the future "Middle East of North America" in oil potential. Van Hulsen, who has sunk four wells up to now, estimates that oil reserves underneath the val ley may total more than 30 bil lion barrels. Ills estimate Is backed up by the unpublicized but intense ex ploration activity now being con ducted by the major oil compan ies. . While not confirmed by the ma jor firms, local sources estimate the major companies have over 300,000 acres of valley land al ready under lease. There are about one million acres of leasable land In Imper ial County. Scheduled Fiv Completion Some 20 wells are sched uled for completion before the end of the year. Tests so far indicate the pres cence of a high gravity oil, a good economic product requiring very little refining. The possibility of high grade mineral deposits underneath the valley floor was discovered more or less by accident. Mineral bearing brine was un covered in a well drilled hj O'Neill Geothermal Inc., a Mid land, Texas, firm. The well, located near Niland close to the Salton Sea, was sunk to tap underground steam that could be used to generate electricity. Shooting from the earth at a high velocity the brine, accord ing to a report compiled by the American Association for the Ad vancement of Science, was found to contain a large percentage of potash and varying amounts of copper, . silver, iron, gold and other heavy metals. to allow direct recording of music and voices, but putting the com plete sound track on tape first gives better control in recording and produces a better sound qual ity," Carrington says. Direct recording with one oi two turntables for background music and the microphone for narration and sound effects can be chaotic, ridden with fluffs and ending in frustration. Tape It First The painless way is to put ev erything on tape first. Carring ton suggests that the novice de velop his technique first by start ing with a musical background. This is how he suggests doing it: First, edit and title the film and add extra leader on which to record a musical introduction. Before sending it to the labora tory to be striped, time the film carefully for total lenglh and to note the exact times when you want to switch musical moods. While you wait for the film to come back, you can be re cording the music on tape. With tape it is easy to select the pas sages you want, make changes! and edit the takes. Two turn tables wired into the tape re corder allows for fading one pas sage into another. When the film comes back. you are ready to record the sound track by connecting the tape machine to the phono input. Adjust the projector to avoid distortion before recording on the film. Start the projector. Then feed the music on the leader for the introduction. Over the titles, you might have the music a bit louder, but it is best to keep it soft during the film. As the film comes to an end. gradually turn down the projec tor input volume to fade out with the picture. It is best to record at low volume level. I Try Again If anything goes wrong, nothing1 is lost but projection time. With the music on the ' master tape, 1 you need only try again. If your timing has been accurate, the1 tape should stay In sync for at least 20 minutes, if the recorder itself is a good one. i Allied's audio consultant ad-! vises connecting tlie projector to your hi - fi equipment for full range sound. Once the musical background technique is mastered, Carring ton says, try adding voice or sound effects. If your home mov ies are basically personal trave logs, narration may be more Im portant than mitslc. Again it is best to put the nar ration on tape. Time out each scene where narration is indicat ed. Tape each segment, leaving a one-second pause on the tape between segments. Then, as each scene comes on, you can record the narration from a tape re corder plugged into the micro phone input on the tape recorder, merely by using the pause button. But that's not all. Prehistoric children positively were encouraged to draw on walls. Unlike today's children, who draw a circlo for the face and lines for limbs, the prehistoric toddlers painted natural shapes. The points about prehistoric child psychology wore made in an interview with Dr. Revil Ma son, a local archaeologist asked to comment on an exhibition ol fossils dating back more than throe million years. The "man in Africa" exhibition was organized by Prof. Raymond Dart, of Wilwatcrsand University here. It ranges from fossils of skulls and weapons to rook paintings a mere 2.000 years old. Dr. Mason said he's convinced paintings found in the raves were the work of children. They were found close to the floor. Besides, they were far simpler than the work of more ex perienced artists found higher up on the walls. Many of tlie prehistoric arti facts on show were discovered at tlie Makapansgat caves. Makapansgat itself is a mute history book which contains man's history, layer by layer from three million years ago to tho present.
