That's the same bulge that separated these California rivals after weekend action, leaving some figure filberts wondering if history was ready to repeat itself. i ou aon t neea a long memory to recall that the Dodgers blew ft four-game lead in the final week of the 1962 season and then bowed to the Giants in a three game playoff. This year, though, (ihe Dodgers seemingly have hit Hie skids much earlier. Since July 20. when the Dod gers held a 10-game lead over the Giants, Walt Alston's men have lost 11 of 20 games. During the same period, the Giants, led hy wondrous Willie Mays, have won 15 of 19. Mays, hitting in his 13th straight game, doubled in two key nins to help the Giants whip the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1 while the Cincinnati Beds wal loped Sandy Koufax and the Dod gers, 9-4. Braves Beat Cards The Milwaukee Braves ripped the Kt. The Yankees, who played un der .500 ball last August, won their sixth straight game with a 10-inning. 6-4 decision over the Los Angeles Angels Sunday to ncrea.se their league lead to nine full games over Chicago. Even more frightening to the other nine clubs than the huge lead is the pure statistics of the situation. The Yankees, with a 74-40 record, need only split their remaining 48 games to finish with 98 victories. Chicago, to match this total, would have to take 32 of their remaining 46 contests. That would be a .6 clip, or 127 percentage points better than the White Sox have been doing thus far. The Sox didn't help their cause any Sunday, dropping the first game of a doubleheader to the Detroit Tigers, 7-2. before coming back with a 3-2, 11-inning triumph in (he nightcap. Chicago now has lost 10 games more (han the Yankees. Twins Beat Ronton The Minnesota Twins scored a 5-2 win oer the Boston Red Sox. It was the sixth straight success for the third-place Twins and kept them 914 games behind the Yankees. The Baltimore Orioles beat the Washington Senators, 6-2, and the Cleveland Indians edged the Kansas City Athletics, 2-1. Elston Howard and Hector Lo pez, both late-game replacements shared the hero roles lor the Yankees. Howard slammed a three-run, two-out, ninth-inning homer to send the game into ex Ira innings, and Lopez drove in the winning run with a 10th- inning single. Relief pitcher Bill Stafford stopped the Angels over the final two frames to gain his fourth victory, and Julio Navarro took the loss. Aids Own Cause Gary Peters went all the way for Chicago in the second game and in addition to holding Detroit to just one earned run he con tributed a single, double and homer to his own cause. How ever, he reeded an 11th inning home run by Dave Nicholson to gain his 12th triumph and his seventh in a row. Don Mossi and Terrv Fox scattered seven hits for Detroit in the opener and got their main hitting support from Bubba Phillips and Al Kaline, each with three safeties. Zoilo Versalles hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Don Mincher connected with two on in the fifth to account for all the Minnesota runs. Camilo Pas cual took it from there, yielding only a two-run homer to Dick Stuart, to gain his 14th victory in 20 decisions. Pitcher Milt Pappas slammed a two-run homer and relief hurler Slu Miller contributed a bases filled triple as Pappas beat Wash ington for the eighth straight time. Ron Kline was the loser. Puerto Rico is the first terri torial team to play in the scries, j By JERRY WAGGONER ; Herald and News Sports Editor j The Klamath Falls Nationals, Oregon State and Regional Babe Ruth champions, arrived buck home to the cheers of an estimat ed 1,500 fans who turned out to show their respects to the new champions who will represent Ihe Pacific Northwest in the Bahe Ruth World Series Aug. 18-24 in Farmington, N.M. It was indeed a warm wel come and one well deserved by the Nationals. They hadn t been home since they left to go to the state tournament in The Dalles July 28. They won the stale title there in a breeze and drove right on from there to Kel logg. Idaho, where they won the Regional title. The street and law n in front of the courthouse was packed with people who had been waiting for about an hour for (he team to arrive. They did so at about 10 p.m.. a tired group ol young sters after a gruelling tourna ment and a 13-hour drive home. However, they seemed to lose some of that fatigue during the welcome. The welcome began with Bob Barllett as the master of cere monies. He turned the program over to George Callison of the Klamath County Chamber of Com merce who made a short speech. He called the team a million dol lar team, but then changed his mind and said no price tag could be put on them. He also slated that the recogni tion by the team had been excel lent publicity for Ihe town and Klamath Basin. He also said that the boys had forgotten three words during the gruelling tour nament, "fear, fatigue and fail ure," "They had no fear of t h e opposition, seemed endless with their energy in not gelling fa tigued when it seemed they sure ly must drop, and the word fail ure never crossed their mind," he told the cheering throng. Bob Moore, coach of the Na tionals, said he was extremely proud of the kids and said they were a great group. And he also dittoed many before him who said they hoped to bring back the World Babe Ruth title from New Mexico. Bob Mezger, the Babe Ruth president of this league in the Basin, made presentations of some beautiful jackets to the players and coaches which par ents had bought for the boys. The jackets were bright red with white leather sleeves and a huge baseball patch on the left side which said Oregon State Babe Ruth Champions 1963. They hope to have room for the World Se ries palch. Giants Eye Phil Sweep PHILADELPHIA (UPI) The San rrancisco Giants wind up (heir series with Philadelphia here today and hope to sweep the four game series. Manager Alvm Dark will pin his hopes on Jim Duffalo, who1 has come along well the past month. The Giants took their third straight from the Phils Sunday, 5-1, to maintain their drive to catch the Ixis Angeles Dodgers. Jack Sanford collected his 11th victory against 12 losses although I he needed help from Billy Hoeft; and Don Larscn. ! Willie Mays continued his hit-1 ting, collecting a double in four trips, driving in a pair of runs. It was the I3!h game in which he has hit safely. A rarity saw Willie McCovey hooted out of the game in the fifth for protesting a call by plate umpire Ed Vargo. Philly manager Gene Mauch will start Chris Short, who has ft 3-9 record this year. Duffalo will be gunning for his fifth victory without a defeat. Title Fight Losers Meet! NEW YORK lUPIi-Luis Rod-j riguez and Denny Moyer, who lost world titles this year, will, fight in a nationally televised 10-1 rounder at the Miami Beach Audi-1 torium Saturday night. j Cuban Rodriguez of Miami, 26, outpointed New York's Emilc Griffith for the welterweight (147 pound) crown al Los Angeles,1 March 21, but lost it back to Griffith at Madison Square Gar den on a decision, June 8. Moyer of Portland, Ore., 24, lost Ihe junior middleweight (154- pound i title to Ralph Dupas of New Orleans in New Orleans, on a decision. April 29, and failed to recapture it in their return match on June 17. Because of his aggressiveness, speed and durability, Rodriguez will be favored at about 2-1 over baby-faced Denny.
