Is A 50-Year-Old 'Middle-Aged'? Anniversaries By AW LANDKRS Dear Ann Landers: I am a 17-year-old boy with a perfectly sensible question which no one I seems to be able to answer. So I am writing to (you. Why do 50 -vear - old Deoole i refer to them- Jt (selves as "mid l Idle-aged?" How IBwwaj many people live to be 100 anyway? My own idea is that middle ape should be half of life expectancy, which puts it at about 35. My own parents are in the 50-ycar-old group and they consider themselves middle-aged. Are they trying to kid themselves or w hat? Please let me know what you think about this. It's been bugging me for a long time. SPEAKER OF THE TRUTH Dear Speaker: When I was 17, I thought middle age was about 30. When I got to be .10 1 shoved middle age up about 10 or 15 years and I've been shoving it up ever since. Why all this preoccupation with age. Buster? I've said it before and I'll say it again . . . It's only a number. Baby. Dear Ann Landers: I have hunt ed everywhere for the newspaper that carried your column about en 11-month pregnancy. Will you 'please tell me when and where this happened? My friend bet me $10 that no such item appeared. She claims all pregnancies are about the same length of time and that peo ple get confused for all sorts of reasons. I know she is wrong be cause I was pregnant with my second child for ll'i months. Please settle this for us. Thank you. J and R Dear J and R: There was noth ing in my column recently about an 11-month pregnancy. What ynu arc probably referring to is a let. tcr from a woman who complained because her friend could never get anyplace on lime. She repeat ed the town Joke that Addle was an 11-month baby and hail been late ever since. The average full-term pregnan cy is about 280 days, which is approximately nine months. This can vary several days one way or the other. But medical srieoce has never recorded an II1, -month pregnancy. .Maybe it jusl seemed that long. Honey. Dear Ann Landers: Our son Ron is going to marry a fine girl whom I will call Anna Marie. She was born and reared in another country and her parents speak very little English. They are very foreign in their ways. Please don't take my head off and tell me I am a snob. Our son is lucky to get this girl. Anna Marie is not only beautiful, but also brilliant and talented. She has already secured a teaching po rtion on the staff of a conserva tory and will help put Ron through law school. The wedding will be held at a hall and the guests will be re quested to bring money instead of gifts. This will appear on the in vitation. I was mortified when I heard it, but apparently it is the custom in Europe. My husband says to keep my nose out of it and to let them do whatever they want. Appeal By Parents The ruling came on an appeal by parents of students ji the Lev it tow n Union Free School District No. 5 on Long Island. Tlie local Board of Education on Sept. 4, 1962 adopted a resolu tion that each school day begin with Use Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed by "reading or recitation of an appropriate ex cerpt from the Bible . . . singing of the fourth stanza of 'Ameri ca' or ... an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence or other historical document signifi cant to our national and spirit ual heritage." Allen said it wis apparent that tlie Levittown board "deliberate ly set out to evade tlie constitu tional prohibition against daily religious exercises in public schools" by providing a list of alternative exercises. He said it was only the daily morning devotional exercises that the Supreme Court decisions and his own were concerned with.
