Wednesday, August 7, 1963 PAGE 5-A 42 Beheaded By Bandits BOGOTA, Colombia H'PI '-Machete-wielding bandits beheaded 42 persons Monday in assaults on four vehicles on a highway about 60 miles northwest of Bogota, ac cording to an army announce ment. The announcement said the bandits stopped a bus and three government dump trucks at a point on the highway between the towns of La Dorada and Victoria in eastern Caldas State. The occupants of the vehicles were forced into a small house near the highway, robbed and be headed one at a time, the army Mid. The victims reportedly were public works department laborers and peasants on their way to market. The incident occurred in an area where bandits have massa cred thousands of persons in re cent years despite army efforts to maintain order. Mrs. Benefiel Death Reported LA REVIEW Word has been re ceived by her many friends here of the death on July 12 at St. Helena, Calif., of Mrs. Ev- rena May Benefiel, former resi dent of this area for many years On July 29 she would have been 99 years old. sne was Dorn July 29, 1864, in Iowa, and on March 20, '1887, she was married at Ashland to James T. Benefiel. Four sons and ; daughter were born to the couple Edwin, Fred and Leon Benefiel and Iva Lofftus, all of whom preceded her in death; and James Benefiel, who lives at Foresthill Calif. Her husband died s i x weeks before the youngest son was Dorn ana sne operated a farm to support her family. Sev en years later she married her husband's brother, the late Roh ert Benefiel. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Erma Johnson Millie Royster, and Bob Lofftus of Del Mar, Calif.; Dorothy John son and May Sieberts of Klam ath Falls; Becky Jaska of Lake- view, and Linda Benefiel of San Leandro, Calif.; and by 13 great grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Eisenhower returned today to the command post from which he di rected the Normandy invasion that signaled the beginning of the end of Adolf Hitler's Germany almost 20 years ago. Eisenhower, obviously deeply moved by memories and by the thousands who turned out to wel come him, thanked the residents of the village of Southwick and the city of Portsmouth who thronged the streets to welcome his return. Some ol the crowd surged forward to shake his hand and thump him on the back. Eisenhower is being filmed for a television CBS program on the invasion. Stands Before Map He stood before the master map of the invasion in Southwick House where he made the decision in 1944 to launch history's great est invasion despite gloomy weath er forecasts. Southwick House is now a ward room for officers at the British Navy's Air Direction School. . "The map used to be in the other room which is now used it still Eisen as a dining room, but brings back memories," hower said. He praised the local residents, many of whom shared the top secret information that the inva sion was imminent, for their co operation. ' "I could never have performed my task without your cooperation and tolerance, Eisenhower said "Through your tolerance the se crecy of the D-Day headquarters was maintained. He paused and said simply I just want to say thanks." Normandy-Bound About 100 persons lined the streets of Southwick practically the entire population of the village. More than 2,000 others gathered to cheer him in Portsmouth where he called on the lord mayor. The throng delayed his depart ure 40 minutes. NASA Sets Twin Shot WASHINGTON H'PI' - The space agency said today it will try to launch two satellites with one rocket late Uiis year to meas ure the effect of incoming radia tion on tlie earth's atmosphere. Tlie satellites will be launched into near-polar orbits by a three- stage solid-fuel Seoul rocket from the Pacific Coast missile range. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration iNASA) said: -"It will be the first attempt to measure air densities by a polar orbiting satellite. "It will be tlie first attempt to use Scout to place two satel lites into orbit at tlie same time." The military has staged mul tiple single-shot launches before but with different rockets for dif ferent purposes. One ol the spacecralt in tlie Scout launch will be a radiation measuring payload provided by the State University of Iowa. The other will be a 12-foot polka dot sphere, inflated in space, which will measure air densities at orbital altitudes. The polka dots are special materials de signed to control the spheres temuerature. Scientists have evi dence that particle radiation from space heats the upper atmos phere, causing it on occasion to rise to higher altitudes than it would otherwise reach. Hunting Party Off To Alaska BONANZA A hunting party left Bonanza the morning of Aug. 3 for a month in Alaska hunting grizzly bear, moose, caribou and daghl sheep. In the party were Henry Vaden, 81, Klamath Falls, Ralph Vaden and Bill Noble of Langell Valley and Cecil Haley. Ivan Bold and son Gary of Bonanza. They will drive to White River. Alaska, then charter a plane and fly to North Way where Ralph Vaden's brother, Doug Vaden, owns a hunting lodge. They ex pect to return home about Sept. ti, .
