The ten men and two women gained personal acquaintance with the work of the various homes and child-care agencies that last year provided for 73 Klamath County Court appointed juveniles, babies, upwed mothers and children from broken homes. The agencies Spent over $60,000 for Klamath County wards last year and while the county's cam- few :rs-S JWfsys.-.i?j NEW ARRIVAL GREETS A FRIEND This youngster, full of fear and insecurity, just arrived at the Waverly Baby Home in Portland hours before this picture was taken. The tot is the victim of a broken home and was sent to the home by the court. The youngster is one of 300 children from infancy to 5 years of aije who is helped each year at the home which depends heavily ot support from the' Oregon United Appeal which in turn is supported by the United Fund. The baby home was one of the agencies toured by 12 UF pilot firm representatives. Swim Team Organizes DUNSMUm-Mrs. Robert Von Hein is the chairman of the new ly organized parents' group sup porting the Dun?imiir Dolphins, a local swim team. Mrs. George Higgins was named secretary at the organization meeting, and Roger Ellis, Harold Walsh, and Francis LeJlcre Jr., were appointed committee mem bers. The group approved an in surance program,, uniform swim suits, and an insignia for next year. Mrs. Von Hein was asked to obtain sample bylaws from the Redwood City swim team club. Tile Dunsmuir Dolphins, about 20 youngsters, ages 8 to 15, have been learning race tech niques from Peter Wright, local instructor, and have made good showings in meets with Anderson and McCloud. The group intends to slate team signups next May and arrange a meet schedule. LITTLE PEOPLE'S PUZZLE Camp Counselor Awards Given LAKEVIKW The camp coun selor award, a new feature of the 411 camping program, was awarded this yeai to Deanna .Johnston and Ray 'Hopkins, re ports Barbara Glodt, extension agent. The camp stall made the awards after camp was over, and recipients were announced at an evaluation meeting. Ray and De anna were chosen from a group of 11 camp counselors. Criteria considered in making the selections included the en thusiasm and initiative shown by the counselor; leadership ability; health and stamina: ability to be tactful and fair-minded; sincerely and cheerfulness in carrying out the camp program; sensitivity tn the feelings of the campers; co ox?ration. and sense o humor. Also important was the respect demanded of the camper and the ability of e counselor tn work with the slait and camper. JFK's Area Redevelopment Plans Facing New Troubles In Committee WASHINGTON (UPH - Presi dent Kennedy's area redevelop ment, bill, bruised by an encoun ter with civil rights, was headed today toward new trouble in the House Rules (mmittee. The bill, designed to bring aid ; to financially depressed areas by authorizing money for public projects, appealed to have enough votes to clear the House Banking Committee but the rules committee chairman, Howard W. Smith, D-Va., has served notice he will do everything he can to stop it. Ranking committee Democrats agreed to support an amendment barring funds to aid construction of motels and hotels, avoiding a battle over a proposed amend ment barring discrimination in any hostclries built with ARA funds. They also sgreed to trim about $100 million off the $455 million authorization approved by the Senate. Republicans and conservatives charge tlie bill, an extension of a previous Kennedy program, is a "boondoggle."
