HERALD AND BIG CATCH Irene, Young, 5040 Miller, caught : i h i t big trout lest Sunday at the Williamson River Bridge Resort. The fish weighed 10 pounds and measured 29 inches. It was caught about e quar ter of a mile from the store on a 10 pound test line and a worm as bait. Ballplayers Are Funny Characters PAGE 4 C - - f '.: ' ' ; n it ''1 - 4f lit 44ii llM-ll H II IIIMIIIBIHflT-fl lliriH NEW YORK (UPD - Ballplay ers are funny. They claim, doublchcadcrs are . murder on their legs yet gladly walk (our hours to play 18 holes of golf. They gripe about official scor ers not knowing anything about baseball but readily admit they couldn't keep a boxscore them selves, A ballplayer will loan a team mate money, his car or his fa vorite sport jacket but he'll fight him for one extra turn in the bat ting cage. No matter how many managers they've ever played for, they'll1 usually Insist the present one is by Jar the besl And after he's fired, they'll tell you confidentially that he could never handle men. They advise youngsters starting out to keep their minds strictly on baseball and then spend most of their time pouring over cross word puzzles in the clubhouse be fore the game. They're extremely sensitive to the slightest bit of criticism but feel it's perfectly okay to blast an umpire for not doing his job right. They won't walk across the street to see a ball game but they'll travel five miles to take advantage of a two-dollar bar gain on sport shirts. They try to tell you they don't Keep up wan tneir calling aver ages but nine out of 10 know ex actly what they're hitting right down to the last fraction . They claim that proper equip ment is Vital, then keep on using spikes that are worn down to the nub They're never quite satisfied with one position. Infielders prac tice throwing knucklcrs on the sidelines and outfielders like to try Uie inlleld during pro-game drills. No one, however, ever volunteers to switch places with the catcher. Worst thing to do before a ball game, they say, Is to guzzle soda pop. So practically all of them do. sysyii OCEAN SNAG Homer Boren of 2515 Union caught this big Chinook salmon juit out of Newport earlier in the month while on a fiihinq j e u n t. He caught the 25' -pound sal mon which measured 37 inches with a big fight. i NEWS, Klamath Falli, Ore. Gets Two Safeties BOSTON (UP!) - Jimmy Pier- sail donned the Los Angeles Angel halo Saturday and promptly add ed prophecy to the widely varied things he has done in an U-ycar major league career. Picrsall, inserted into the An gels starting lineup by manager Bill Rigncy though lie reported only 30 minutes before game lime, had two singles in four trips to help the Angels to a 5-2 victory over Boston. Strangely, Piersall himself pre dicted the two hits in a hurried pre-game press conference. In re ply to a question on what 'had been wrong with him in New York, Piersall answered, nothing that two hits Saturday wouldn't fix." piersall, who had two putouts i an otherwise unspectacular game in center field, flicd out his first time up and grounded out in the fifth inning. But in the seventh, with one on and one out, Picrsall singled to ght to move the runner to third. He was out at second on a field er's choice as what proved to be the Eame-tyms run scored. An Inning later, he contributed a siiv gle to keep alive a two-run uv surance rally for the Angels. To put Picrsall in centerfield Rlgney had to bench "for a rest' the smallest plnyer in the major leagues, Albie Pearson. Rigncy, whose cast of cliarac tcrs unlil recently included the flamboyant Bo Bclinsky, said he had Jong boned to obtain tlie 33- year-old Piersall to till a need lor another right handed hitting out fielder. Waived By Mcts JliGnev formally announced Pier- sail's signing only minutes after the waivers placed on the veteran outfielder by the Now yotk mcis had officially expired. To make room for Picrsau, tne Angels optioned Inliclder Charlie Decs back to tlioir farm club in Hawaii. In addition, the Angels sent catcher Ed Kirkpatrick to Hawaii leaving a roster vacancy which could be filled later by an other transaction. The Los Angeles signing, mark ing Picrsall's return to the Amer ican League after only a brief 40 game tour in the National League, was his fifth major league assign ment. He broke in with Boston in 1952 and played for tlie Red Sox for six seasons with time out for a nervous breakdown which even tually resulted in his book "Fear Strikes Out." Traded In 1961 He was traded to Cleveland in 1861 and went to the Washington Senators in 1962. He batted .244 w ith the Nats lust season and was hitting .250 this year when he was sent to I lie Mels as part ol tlie deal that made Cil llodgcs the Washington manager.
