Tlie combative little Chicago White Sox second baseman who just might be he only fpl low in the American League who hasn't conceded to the New York Yankees needs only three more hits to reach 2.500 for his career. That's a total reached by only five second basemen all hall of famers Eddie Collins. Nap I.ajoie. Frankie Frisch. Charlie Gchringer and Rogers Hornsby. Fox knocked in three runs with two singles and scored the White Sox' fourth run of the 'game Thursday in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The win enabled the second-place White Sox to move within eight games of the Yankees, whose six-game winning streak was ended by a 5-fl loss to the Los Angeles Ang els. Indians Over Twins The Cleveland Indians edged the Minnesota Twins, 3-2, the Kansas Citv Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox, 2-0, and the Raltimore Orioles downed the Washington Senators. 4-2, in other American League games. In the National League. Pitts burgh defeated Los Angeles, 6-2, San Francisco beat New York. 8-6, St. Louis topped Milwaukee. 3-1; Cincinnati downed Chicago, 3-2. and Houston beat Philadel phia, 3-0. Fox, 35, singled home Mike Hershberger in the third inning and rode home on Dave Nichol son's triple. He also singled home two more runs in the seventh in ning to boost the White Sox into a 4-0 lead and provide the ne cessary cushion for two relief pitchers to preserve Joe Hor len's fifth victory. Major league records held by Fox include most consecutive games without striking out, most years leading the majors in few est strikeouts, most consecutive years leading in singles, most consecutive gomes played at sec ond base, most years leading second baseman in chances, most season with 6(10 at bats and most years leading second basemen in putouts. Twirls Three-Hitter Ken McBride pitched a three hitter to win his 12th game for the Angels, who tagged fireball er Al Downing with his second loss. Downing paved the way for his own defeat witn two walks in the first inning followed by a dou ble by Felix Torres and a two run single by Ken Hunt. Willie Kirkland's three-run eighth-inning homer brought tlie Humphrey Wins Bout With Pin AK1TA, Japan 'LTD-An all star team of wrestlers from Ore gon high schools won its fourth team competition in five starts in Japan today, defeating an all-star team from high schools in Akita province in northern Japan. The Orcgonians won today's competition 7 to 1 and added vic tories in two open matches which did not figure in the team scoring. Fischer, 'who pitched the middle six in nings, won his ninth game while 13-game winner Bill Monhou-i quette suffered his seventh loss for the Red Sox.
