State Department Officials To Speak At Eugene Two high officials of (lie U.S State Department will be fea tured speakers during a Pacific Northwest Assembly Aug. 1 to 4 at the University of Oregon. They are Mrs. Catherine Dorris vrrcll, deputy assistant Secre ' of State for Educational and t'dwral Affairs, and John C. Gu thrie, director of tiie Office of So viet Union Affairs of the U.S. State Department. The assembly at tlie University of Oregon, which will be attended by opinion, leaders from five western states, will probe tlie problems of "Cultural Affairs and Foreign Relations." Tlie meeting will be co-sponsored by the Uni versity and tlie American As sembly at Columbia University. Mrs. Norrell filled tlie unex pired term of her late husband. Rep. William F. Norrell, in the 87th Congress. Slic assumed her duties in the office of Assistant Secretary of Slate Lucius D. Battle last January. The bureau headed by Battle is responsible for tlie international exchange of persons and oilier activities in tlie educational and cultural fields, as well as tlie co-. ordination of such activities on Ue part of more than 20 oilier government agencies operating in this area. Alter the fall of Hong Kong he was in terned by the Japanese for the duration of the war. During this period he took advantage of tiie fact that there were many Rus sians in the Volunteer Defense Corps to acquire an excellent knowledge of the Russian lan guage.
