agreed to by both nations in a
Geneva accord last month.

The theory of the Captured Air
Bubble 'CAB) Vessel involves air
trapped beneath the hull of the
vessel which is powered by a jet

The current research test vehi
cle has sideboards and movable
back and front flippers exetnding
into the water which permits the
hull to ride two or three feet
above the water pushed up by
the "captured" air.
The jet engine is located above
deck on the stern between to
fins. Auxiliary power for docking
and maneuvering in basin areas
is provided by a conventional 110
horsepower marine engine.
The test vehicle, known as the
XR-I, was built under the direc
tion of Walter Simmons, a project
engineer at the Naval Air Engi
neering Center at the Philadel
phia Naval base. '
The XR-1, with a crew of four,
made its first successful run on
the Delaware River, adjacent to
the naval base, on May 24 and
further trials are being conducted.
