1 ) i l I I 5 Yachts Hindered By Winds LOS ANGELES (UPI) Stiff uiivis of up to 15 knots were ex pelled to whip the fleet of 32 en tries in the 2,225-mile Trans-Pa cifie Yacht Race to a fresh com petitive basis today. "It now is apparent the compet itors are approaching the north east trade winds that will keep the big parachute spinnakers blowing all the way to Diamond Head," a race official forecasl Monday. Despite calm seas and sluggish breezes 24 hours ago that en abled smaller craft to gain ground on the larger entries, the 72-foot yawl Audacious surged into the lead. It reported its position then as 635 miles off the Pacific coast , The Audacious, owned by bald win M. Baldwin of Newport Beach, Calif., overtook the front- running position from Australia's 73-foot schooner, Astor, owned by Peter Warner. The Astor fell back to third place at a distance of 602 miles. On the handicap basis by which the 23rd biennial race is judged however, the 33-foot sloop Spirit, out of San Francisco, was leading jri fleet competition at a distance of 542 miles, the Tiare, a 40-foot yawl out of New York, was in second, and the Contessa III, a 40-foot sloop from Tokyo, was in third place on a handicap basis. Until Monday's break from the doldrums, the escort coast guard cutter Dexter reported most of the fleet encountered little assist ance from winds. The race be gan from Los Angeles Harbor July 4. A scratch entry, the Novia del Mar, John P. Scripps's 90-foot veteran ketch out of San Diego, Calif., jumped into second place in total distance, reporting 624 miles out to sea.
