Nation's Only Space Engineering College Has Top Scientist On Faculty Duti-nu nivtL-i L. t t. . , t.. i i i ..... ...... .......... But what you will find at Bre vard Enjjuieoriiig College, about 20 miles down the coast, is faculty made up of some of the nations top scientists and engi fleers. The part-time Instructors lec ture in classrooms filled with ded icated students whose average age is 30. Most of the students and near' ly all the faculty members ere employed at missile and space I technological centers at Cape Ca naveral and Patrick Air Eorco Base. Sparked by space-race indus tries which have grown up along the coast near the cape, Brevard is tlie first college in the United States to offer a master of sci ence degree, in space technology. Vine-covered walls would seem out of place at Brevard, where theories chalked on a blackboard may be used the next day in dealing with a real missile-track ing situation. East doubled and now South stood by his guns. West opened the king of dia monds and for some reason or other East lot him hold the trick. West shifted to a heart and South went up with dummy's queen. When this held only a couple more things wcro necessary to bring home the four-spade con tract. South cashed dummy's ace of spades and dropped West's queen. A second spado was won by East's king and East led his singleton club. South studied a whilo and rose with tlie ace. The college was established in 1958 by Dr. Jerome P. Keuper, now its president, and a group of scientists who worked with Keu per for the Radio Corporation of America Service Company. Need More Education Keuper said they started the college because they saw the need for still higher education for the well-educated people in the space field. "We learned that many schol ars and other space experts hesi tated to come to Cape Canaveral because they could not continue their studies here," Keuper said. Of tlie school's 700 students, Keuper said about 165 are grad uate engineers working for mas ter degrees. Tlie rest of the stu dents are undergraduates, some of whom are taking a few sDe- cial courses and others who are working toward a bachelor of sci ence degree. Keuper takes great pride in his ability to stretch his education dollars, which he spends a good part of his time soliciting from private sources. "We built this building we're in now for $7 a square foot," he said proudly, adding that other school buildings in the area haveiculty member, a clerk and a jan- cost twice as much. "What we need now is some body who w. nts to have his name on a new library building," Keu per said. "I believe we could build it for $60,000. We already have the books." Keuper keeps a tight rein on operation costs. He, a single ta ilor are the only full-time em ployes at the college. Keuper said the school, so far, has received no local, state or federal aid, but he gave the im pression he wouldn't turn it down if it were offered. Keuper said all of the major companies near here working on government missile contracts ap prove of the college as a way for their employes to progress in their fields. Many of these com panies make donations to the school as well as pay the tuition of their emloyes, he said. Keuper, a 42-year-old native of Newport, Ky., who holds a bach elor of science degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute ol Technology and a master's degree m physics from Stanford Lniver sity, said he is in the education field to stay.
