He was seriously injured Tuesday when working out on a trampoline. He remains in critical condition after suffering a broken neck with possible damage to the spinal cord. He was hurt while executing a double twist back somersault. He was practicing routines on the trampoline when the accident occurred. He is an accomplished gymnast as well as track star. He is seen in the right photo accepting the University of Washington's athlete of the year award in May. Sternberg suffered a dislocation of the neck vertebrae and spinal cord damage Tuesday evening when he fell while working out on a trampoline at the University of Washington. "Tile condition of Brian Stern berg is still listed as critical," said the latest statement from the hospital. "Paralysis and respira tory problems still persist." The blue-eyed junior of the Uni versity of Washington remains paralyzed from the neck down and has sensory loss from the neck down. Doctors at the hospital said it would not be until Friday morn int". at least, before it would be possible to determine the extent of permanent paralysis, if any. A spokesman said Sternberg was in an "excellent mental frame of mind" despite the fact his chances of ever again competing in athletics were "pretty grim." Spokane and Tacoma will know today who will represent the Northern Division in the All-Star game July 8. Both clubs won games Wednesday night. Spokane overwhelming Hawaii 14-1 while Tacoma took a 6-3 decision from Dallas-Ft. Worth in 10 innings. The Giants are I'i games off the pace with the issue to be decid ed after today's games. In the Southern Division the race is even closer with Okla homa City holding a one game bulge over the Rangers. The Rangers' loss to Tacoma hurt as the 89ers edged by Seattle 8-7. The hottest team in the league right now is the Denver Bears. They used the home run ball to U.S. touring brigade, also drew Hue Portland 3-2 for their ninth Iree passes into the championship flight. The qualifying rounds today nnd Friday will be held over two links the St. Annes old course and Fairhaven. Lone Upset Mars Meet PORTLAND 1 UPI 1 - Only one major upset marked the third round of the Oregon Tennis Tour nament at the lrvington Tennis Club Wednesday. The Giants squandered four home runs Wednesday in taking a 6-5 whipping from Milwaukee and wrangle with the Braves again in the linale of the series today It will be Jack Fisher (3-71 on the mound for San Francisco against Tony Cloninger (4-4) for Milwaukee. A sullen Dark had little to say after Wednesday's defeat a game in which the Giants frittered away a (our-run lead when the Braves broke a 26-inning scoring drought by counting six times in the sixth. "There's one tiling for sure." said Dark. "A man can't hit .200 and play major league baseball." Dark was referring io Jose Pa gan, generally regarded as the lincst fielding shortstop in the National League. "So I'm going to try out Ernie Bowman there (or a while. And don't be surprised if any Giant should show up playing any posi tion. Kuenn, MeCovey Slav "There's one thing definite, however. Harvey Kuenn and Wil lie MeCovey are going to stay in the lineup. If it weren't for them we'd be in bad shape.
