The rain interrupted afternoon was a happy day for the Amer ican entries as Uarlene Hard. Billie Jean Moffit and Donna Floyd Fales swept into the quar terfinals of the women's division with straight-sets triumphs. The 19-year-old Miss Moffitt lor the second year in a row sprang the biggest upset of the women's tournament by rallying brilliantly to eliminate second seeded Lesley Turner of Aus tralia. 4-6. 6-4. 7-5. Last year Miss Mo.'fit beat top-seeded Mar garet Smith of Australia in the opening round. Dick Emberger, a Marine sta tioned at Camp Pendleton, fin ished second with 7.331 points, and won the second berth on a United Stales track team which will compete with Russia and oth er European countries next mo..th. Pauly succeeds C. K. Vang of L'CLA as national champion. Vang, who holds the world rec ord of 9,121 points, passed up this meet to join oJicr Nation- Mi alist Chinee athletes on a Euro J5'pean tour. Competing in his seventh de cathlon, Pauly surpassed his all lime best mark in five of the 10 events. His previous best total mark was 7.244 last year. He fin ished third in the I9f2 cham pionships and was a member of the U.S. team which competed against a Russian team last sum mer at Palo Alto. Pauly s first day marks were 11.3 in the lnfj meter dash. 22 feet 10 in the broad jump, 47 feet in the shot put, six feet in the high jump and 49.6 in the 400 meters. The Marine from Roanoke, Va., ran the l.snn meter in 4:19.2 for 625 points. Edstrom, who had pulled ahead after nine events, scored only 481 points with a 4:32.6 clocking in tlie event. II was still Edstrom'a best time in that event. Mulkey went for broke in tlie pole vault and failed. Knowing he would lose ground in the javelin, he elected to pass a numfJer of lower heights in the pole vault and try for a big score at higher elevations. The former Memphis State star cleared 11 feet lO'i, passed at 12 feet 5, cleared 12 leet II in his second try and passed again at 13 feet 3 1 a . Then he failed in three attempts to clear 13 feet 7. Sam King edged out Herman Keiser and 3 for P.ritain'i only point The Klamalh Falcons strength' cned their hold on first place in the Southern Division of t h e American Legion Baseball League Saturday night at Gem Sta dium w hen fireballing Rich Jack son stopped the Klamath Hawks on three hits, 9-0. The win gave the Falcons a 7-1 league record for the season and handed the Hawks their sixth loss in nine games. The Falcons lead the league. The Klamath Hawks go to Ash land today for another league game while the Falcons, orgin ally slated for a setto at Oregon City, will be idle because the Oregon City game was rained out. The Falcons had tlie game in hand all the way behind the fast ball offerings of Jackson who has yet to lose a league contest. He struck out seven in getting the win while Steve Young absorbed the loss. He was relieved in the sixth by Tom Pilgrim w ho worked the final frame. Tlie league leaders jumped off to a quick 3 0 lead and never were in any real trouble. LcVoy Young led off with a single and went to second base on an er ror. He wasted his energy as Lar ry iBinncy stepped up and tri pled him home easily. Binney trotted home when John Parisot to got the third straight hit, but tlie Falcon third sacker was chopped down on a throw back to first base when he made his turn. Mike Kitching flew out to center and Jay Paxton was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on an error and scampered home on Dave Johnson's single.
