Kdllor's Note: This is the first of periodic articles with which it is liopod citizens of the Klamath area might become better ac quainted with the extent of con-servation-manaccment programs of the Oregon State Game Com mission. Persons desiring an arti- le on any particular operation of tlie department, or management function, arc invited to reoucst by card addressed to P.O. Box 1063, Klamath Falls. By DAN EASTMAN Game Biologist It is the conclusion of a great many waterfowl enthusiasts that the two mast spectacularly col ored birds to bo found locally are the males of the wood duck and hooded merganser in full plumage. Unfortunately, few peo ple have enjoyed observing them because of their strange habits and general rarity. Recog nizing this lack of abundance, reg ulations for many years have lim ited tlie daily take to one bird of each. Both wood ducks and hooded mergansers arc two of a few species which typically nest in tree cavities several Xect from the ground. Management personnel concluded many years ago that limitations of natural nesting cav ities were tlie primary factor lim iting the wild populations. As a means of enhancing suit able nesting sites to increase pop ulations, a nesting box program was undertaken a good many years ago with tlie added coopera tion of youth groups and individ uals. Tlie program is having en couraging results if the increasing use of nesting boxes can be used as an indicator. Here in Klamath County, the program has developed gradual- young birds. ly to determine areas inhabited by, and attractive to the birds. Results to date show the west side of Upper Klamath Lake, As pen Lake and much of tlie Spraguc Itiver as ideal for installation oi ; the nest boxes. The annual check 1 of boxes to determine the extent of use and for banding studies has just been completed and o! 67 boxes in usable condition, 48 were being used by wood ducks, nine of which also had some hood ed merganser oggs inside. in nesting boxes close by where they were banded. One bird has '. been captured three times now at Odessa Creek where it was first banded in 1961. It was the original intent of the program to think in terms of tlie Hood duck population, but grad ually more and more hooded mer gansers are beginning to use the nests which is an encouraging sign. This year for the first time, three hooded mergansers were captured incubating eggs in the nest and were banded. Tile common question is "how do the young get out of the nest." or "aren't they hurt when they fall," as some of the boxes arc over 20 feet above the ground. Witliip a very short time after hatching, tlie hen will leave the nest and call the young with a peculiar whistle. The young birds literally hurl themselves out of the opening in tlie box and float like a powder puff to tlie ground with no ill ' affects. The young are equipped with a sharp tooth on the end of tlie bill and toenails which en able them to claw up the inside of the box n they can t hurl them selves to the opening. In spite of tlie fact the nest may be some distance from water, the young gather with the hen and are sel-. dom seen again as a brood be-' cause of their secretive habits. A good many well-intentioned Individuals have put up boxes for . nesting without adequate knowl-1 edge of tlie needs of the birds., Entrance holes are often oversize, . boxes are too small or no nest tag material is provided. The most discouraging sight, however, arc boxes leaning backwards or with smooth lumber which prove all too often to be a trap for Indian Art Displays Scheduled LAKEVIEW A busy summer has been outlined by Robert L. .Ogle of the Indian Village in Lake- view in connection with showing Four other boxes had hooded mcroanscr ccas beino Incubated. Tile total waterfowl use of the boxes was 79 per cent, and this fiKuro has been increasing near ly every year since the Inception his Indian artifacts at Indian fes tivals in various sections of the United States and Canada. He expects approximately one half million persons will view the col lection. of the program. A lolal of 47!) ?gle spent last weekend at the wood duck eggs and 87 hooded J?"" " ' ' ArU J",, merganser eggs were tallied in the k. .s,'ed. Ih ' nest boxes this spring. It is not Bcatty collection and that of June unusual for other unused boxes to be taken over by bees, chipmunks. flying squirrels, sparrow hawks, flickers, tree swallows or black birds. In banding studies were started by capturing of the hen on the nest. Careful timing (close lo hatch I and handling have re sulted in no nest abandonment caused by this activity. Returns from banded birds will reveal lall migration routes and wintering grounds of the locally raised birds. Of added interest is (lie return uf previously banded birds to the same nesting area in subsequent years. Banding continued in 1WZ and again this spring and live birds altogether have been recaptured view. Ore. Poitras of Portland, a Klamath Indian; and also his large col lection of Indian quill work.
