South won the first trick with the ace of spades and counted 1 1 easy tricks. The 12th might lie in diamonds. If not, there was al ways the possibility of a squeeze,' so South decided to Uickle the dia monds right away. He cashed the ace, led a second diamond and stuck in the nine. East won with the Jack and re turned a spndc. West's ten forced dummy's king. South played the king of diamonds from dummy and discarded his last spade. He had hoped to drop the queen but instead West showed out. At this point South could have claimed the balance on a squccie, but such showing off is not good form. Slill South knew he was going to make Ihe hand, because only West could stop spades and only bast could stop diamonds. . Evenlually, no one was going to be able to stop hearts. South ran off five club tricks On the fourth club a heart was discarded from dummy. On the fifth club West had to go down to two hearts in order to hang on tn the jack of spades. 'Die nine of spades was discarded from dum myit had done its work, but the ten of diamonds was left to tqucete East. East had to hang 0 on to the queen of diamonds and .was also forced to go to two hearts. Now South led a heart to dum mv' king and riade Ihe last two tricks with his ace and small heart. . , To learn the squeeze, you'll find a copy of "Win at Bridge With Oswald Jaeony" helplul.
