Giants Top iums, Cards lake NIL Lead; Twin s lap White Soir Marichal Pitches Giants To Win By FRED DOWN UI'I Sporti Wriler The San Francisco Giants' Ions suit is power but don't try to tell the Los Angeles Dodgers they jacK pucning. Not as long as there's a fellow named Juan Marichal on the Giant roster. Marichal is known as the Giants' "big pitcher" the one they like to match against their rival's ace. He throws with a sweeping, high-kicking motion and he beat the Dodgers throe times in our tries last season en route to an overall 18-11 record. The 26-year-old right-hander made it two out of three for this season Tuesday night when he Beam's Choice charcoal filtered 6 years old -90 proof from the distillers of JIM BEAM P J36 The World's Finest Bourbon Since 1795 JIM BEAM $C1 a 'iQt. 5125 J n. j It r .. it (M j pncned a seven-hit 3-0 victory that knocked the Dodgers out of tne National League lead and paved the way for the St. Louis Cardinals to take over the top rung. The win raised Marichal's record to 9-3 and was especially impressive because it came against Don Drysdale. the 25 game winner and Cy Young Award ace of the 1962 Los An geles staff. Swings Big Stick Willie McCovey, the free-swinging San Francisco left fielder, swung the big stick for the Giants a three-run homer which he sliced to left field in the sixth in ning. It's the kind of thing the Giants have come to expect from llcCovey, who tagged Drysdale lor 19 hits, including seven horn ers, lour doubles and a triple, in 35 at-bals last season. Marichal, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter, was in trouble only in the third inning when three Dodger singles filled the bases with two out but he struck out Ron Fairly to end the threat. The loss evened Drys dale's record at 7-7. Cards Beat Biles Hie Cardinals beat the Pitts burgh Pirates, 3-1, the Houston Colts defeated the Chicago Cubs, 6-2, in 10 innings, the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Milwaukee Braves, 8-7, in 10 innings and the Cincinnati Beds whipped the New York Mets, 8-3, in other NL action. Bob Gibson pitched a six-hitter and struck out eight for the Car dinals, who moved into first place, one game ahead of the Dodgers and Giants. The big fire baller also hit a run-scoring sin gle to help earn his fifth win and deal Don Schwall his fourth loss. Bill White had a homer and a single and Dick Groat two singles for the Cardinals. Illls Grand Slam Bob Aspromonte's grand slam loth-inning homer gave Houston relief star Hal Woodeshick his sixth win. Woodeshick led off the winning rally with a single and the bases were filled on an error by losing pitcher Lindy McDaniel and a deliberate walk. Ernie Banks had three hits for the Cubs. Jack Baldschun earned his fourth win for the Phillies when Cal Dalrymple singled with the bases filled in the 10th inning The Braves had taken a 7-6 lead in the top of the inning with the help of Mack Jones' fourth steal of the game one short of the modern record and Roy Mc Millan's third run-producing sin gle. Bob Shaw was the loser for the Braves. Jim Maloney pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 batters in eight innings to win his ninth game for the Reds, whose 12-hit attack was paced by homers by Vada Pinson and Tommy Harper. Stuart. Remember Eddie Stanky, the modern MuRgsy of Brooklyn's "le- rocious gentlemen? "He can't hit, he can't field and he can't run," they said of Stanky. "But in a tough game he'll find a way to beat you." Well, they're saying pretty much the same things about another second baseman today Bernie Al len of the Minnesota Twins. Al len is a skinny guy often over looked among all those Minnesota muscle men, but he's main tained his regular status despite a .164 batting average. "Don't let that average fool you. comments manager Sam Mele, "or you'll liable to be sorry." The 24-year-old native of East Liverpool, Ohio, made his man ager's words look good Tuesday night when the Twins beat the Chicago White Sox, 8-6. for their 16th victory in 20 games and moved to within 2'j games of the American League lead. Bats In Ninth Allen went to the plate in the ninth inning with one out and Rich Rollins on second base. First base was open but White Sox re lief ace Hoyt Wilhclm elected to pitch to the ,146-hittcr. who had made only seven singles in his previous 68 trips to the plate. But Allen crossed up the strat egy w ith a double to right center field and then scored the icing run on a pinch single by Jimmy Hall. The win went to relief pitch er Bill Dailcy, ,who gave up one run in 2 1-3 innings and now has allowed only that single tally in his last 19 1-3 frames. Zorro Versalles contributed four hits and Rollins, Earl Battey. Harmon Killebrew and Lennic Green two eacli to the Twins' 16- hit attack while Tom McGraw had three hits for the White Sox. Indiana Beat Orioles The Cleveland Indians beat the Baltimore Orioles, 9-5, the Boston Red Sox topped the Detroit Ti gers, 7-3. in 15 innings and the Kansas City Athletics defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 5-2. in other AL games.
