Farmers and land owners in the Klamath Basin arc again faced with a rodent problem. Almost every year the ground squirrels become a problem in several areas Harold Schieferstein. coun ty weed and rodent control su pervisor, reports that tin? ground squirrels arc causing se rious damage lo many of the crops in die area. The squirrel feeds on grasses as well as on the ma tttre grains and seeds. Early in the season upon first emerging from hibernation they will feed on any food available but they soon change their diet to green grass, grain shoots and alfalfa planls. In May and June their diet again changes to grain ker nels as well as the grasses. Dur ing this time poisoning is most ellcctivc. CVop losses can be very high and in some cases fields can be completely lost because of dam age. One squirrel in a season Willi eat the same amount of loon that a i cow consumes in a day. Certain! fields here have losses of at least one-half of the crop per year. Ground squirrels can be con trolled by poisoning. Whole oats Ireated with a special formula us ing strychnine as the poisoning agent has been used effectively Tests Asked If Oregon cattlemen want their rattle to move into the state of Washinglon more freely Oregon uill have to reactivate the test ing for brucellosis of all eligible cattle going hack to the farm or Iced lots from auction yards. This was emphasized at a recent meeting at liellingham, Wash., of state-federal regulatory personnel of Oregon and Washington and representatives of the cattlemen's associations of both stales. At prevnt Oregon cattle enter ing Washington are required to have been tested for brucellosis w ithin the last 30 days before en try. To meet the stringent require ments for testing that Washington has imposed upon her own cattle and eliminate the testing now re quired of Oregon cattle going Into Washington. Oregon will have to step-up its brucellosis eradication program and have a more com plete record on individual herds. for many years. Used properly the bait is not only effective but safe for use around domestic animals. Schieferstein points out that a teaspoon of the bait scattered on i one side of the burrow is suf-1 ficient for each hole. The best results are obtained when the bait is not inserted in die burrow it self, as squirrels won't stop w hen emerging from the burrow. Bait should never be put in piles be cause it is wasteful as well as dangerous to livestock. ; Poultry, pheasants and quail can tolerate relatively large doses of strychnine, and they often refuse lo take more than a few kernels of the bait. However, ducks, geese and doves are very susceptible lo the bait and exlremc care is need ed where these birds range. Poisoned bait prepared by the county agent's office is available at several feed stores through out the county as well as at the extension office localcd on the sec-t ond floor of the Post Office Huikl-inq. And -CYTROL Amitrole-T is the Number 1 quack grass killer recommended by authorities. It has consistently given effective control where other materials have failed. CYTROL sprayed on the foliage gets into quack grass and other tough perennials through the leaves and moves throughout the entire plant, down to the deepest roots. That's why it kills leaves, stems, roots and all. It licks the toughest weed problems because it produces thoroughly dead weeds-does not merely suppress-and thus prevents re-growth, Contact your herbicide supplier for CYTROL and for usage leaflet containing full instructions for application.
