U PI Telephoto Teen-Age Behavior Reaching Point Of Alarm; Survey Shows Early Questionable Patterns . .By United Press Iniernalloiul 1MR1EN, Conn., is a quiet, well " lo-do town which, by outward ap pearances, has been spared many or the social Ills of today's world. But Inside the ostentatious Colon iiil homes which dot its tree-lined streets, there is deep concern about tho conduct of the younger generation. In this commuter suburb of New York City, teen-age behavior has reached the "point of alarm," a study committee of the Council of Daricn School Parents concluded. A community-wide survey, insti gated by merchants disturbed by teen shoplifting and thievery,! showed trends toward "delinquen cy, Immoral behavior and law-breaking." Tlie survey revealed patterns ol Ihott, vandalism, underage drink ing and, perhaps most alarming,' sexual involvement even among' junior high school students. But tin's we do know: Juvenile! delinquency is on the increase, II legitimacy and vencral disease are more prevalent among teen agers now than in recent gener ations and America's fast-paced urbanizing society has confronted 'adolescents with confusion and: contradictions where once there were clear-cut puritan ethics. Several years ago, Dr. Alfred Kinsey spelled out in numbers and percentages what he pur ported to be a reasonably accu rate picture of the sex behavior of American males and females, teen agers included. Some sociologists have questioned the validity of the Kinsey findings and one, Dr. Celia S. Deschin of Adclphi College, Garden City, N.Y., contends they were not only misleading bull harmful In a sex-drenched culture such as ours, She said in a recent article that the Kinsey reports "made possible the inference thati what is is synonymous with what should be that the practices re ported were socially desirable. Morality View Confused Dr. Deschin, a major investiga tor and prolific writer on teen-age sex behavior, sees this Kinsey norm, adult example, absence of parental guidance on moral ques lions, urban anonymity, economic uncertainty and lack of moral, standards In other areas chipping away at long-accepted moral codes Iwrich, if somewhat Victorian at least were clearly defined. Dr. Deschin concludes from her 'studies that "there has been a change" In teen age attitudes to ward sexual indulgence, a trend away from American society's' official" moral code that pre marital sex is patently immoral She believes it is not possible to determine accurately to what ex lent behavior has followed this lib eralization of attitude. The teen-age view of sex and morality Is to a large extent one of confusion and searching for values, Dr. Deschin believes. She thinks adults are largely to be blamed because of their inability to communicate to teen-agers in Pioneer Pens Vivid New Years Letter conversation and example a clear- cut picture of the behavior ex pected of them. "We need parents who will speak out clearly for what ought to be and act resolutely to reinstate discipline and control. We need parents, teachers and other adults who will lift the unhealthy social pressures on youth and counter act the bombardment of sexual stimuli," Dr. Deschin wrote in an article this year In the PTA magazine. U.S. Navy Task Forces Constantly Training For Possibility Of Nuclear Submarine Warfare Kditor's Note: Americans are concerned about Soviet mis siles in Cuba. But many military men and particularly the Navy feel there is a greater menace from enemy submarines prowling off the coasts of the nation. Their feeling Is that Russia will soon have, If she does not al ready, nuclear subs equipped with Polaris-type missiles tipped with atomic explosives. To meet that threat, U. S. Navy task forces are constantly en gaged in anti submarine war fare maneuvers. Here Is a first hand report from "Task Force Bravo" on how they operate. By EDWARD V. MCCARTHY United Press International ABOARD CARRIER USS WASP (UPIl It is night over the At lantic Ocean. On the surface, the dark waves heave endlessly, white foam forming a frothy top which is whipped into spray by gusts ol wind. A chill rain is falling. A bare 50 feet above the crests is an incongruous sight. Hovering like some fantastic beast from an other world is a helicopter, a dark blob in the sky. From it dangles long steel cable which plunges beneath the surface into the "auiet" depths.- While Ihe two pilots struggle against the wind and rain to keep the 'copter almost motionless, a, third crewman sits with earphones! listening to the sounds of the deep There is the usual fish "talk" and the hundreds of other eerie sounds which echo endlessly through the very unquiet ocean currents. Records Rain Drops The sound Is being picked up by sonar listening gear in ball at the other end of the cable sus pended from the helicopter. The sonar even records the rain drops striking on the surlace of the ocean. Suddenly, the man with the ear phones stiffens. To his trained cars. A new sound separates it self from the others. It is the ocular, pulsating throb of a pro peller tile sound of a submarine slinking along, safe from the pry ing eye of radar. He speaks quietly to a crewman sitting next to him, also wearing earphones. The second man is a radioman. He passes the word to; another helicopter operating some; distance away. The second 'copter also picks up the contact and a "tix" is made on the location, speed and heading of the uniden tified sub. - The word is now passed again on the airwaves, this time picked up by a single-engine Skyraider equipped with the latest in radar and radio transmission gear. The Skyraider relays the message to this huge, angle - decked carrier cruising slowly many miles away When word of the "contact is received, the Wasp's calm routine is swiftly broken. The loudspeak ers blare, bells jingle in the engine room, the engines begin to pound and the great ship heads into the wind to prepare for the order to launch planes! Planes Roar Off On deck, 20 twin - engine S2F submarine hunter killers rev up their engines, unfold their wings and roar swiftly off the flight deck into the night, Deep inside the carrier, the "C-I-C" room (Combat Informa lion Center) becomes a beehive of activity. Now. the S2F sub killers are over the ' area. They run out their "MAD" gear a stinger-like pro jection which slides out just be low Ihe tail. MAD stands for mag- natic anomaly detection and it works on a principle involving the north-south magnetic field flux lines which girdle the earth. When metal, such as a subma rine, passes through these lines. they are interrupted and converge on the metallic object. The MAD gear detects this converging o lines and can, figuratively, point a finger right at a submarine be low the surface. Sub Picks L'p Sounds Soon the submarine picks up. through its own sound gear, the throb of propellers as the destroy ers and the carrier, racing at flank speed, approach. The subskipper orders a deep dive and evasive maneuvers. The sub twists and turns, stops its engines and tries to hide by "running silent." But. this helps not at all. Killing all sound leaves the sonar men without a clue. But Ihe MAD gear then takes nver and focuses on the sub. The destroyers, guided by the airborne killers, zero in on tlie target, their depth charges rigged and ready to fire. On the de stroyers, just forward of the bridge1 areas, banks of "hedgehogs" i explosives which resemble some what old fashioned potato mashers also are set to he fired. These are fired off in groups which form set patterns, and explode on contact when they strike a sub marine. Suddenly, the submarine cap tain shrugs his shoulders help lessly. He reaches for a micro phone and calls the carrier. "O.K. You've got me." he tells them with resignation. On the Wasp, Robert E. Ricra grins broadly. Riera, 51, rear admiral U.S. Navy, has won another round in a deadlv serious game played constantly off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States. This time the submarine was an American. It had been sent into the area to give Task Force Bravo a workout. The day could come when the hunt would not be a game. but fur real, with the lion's millions. target an enemy submarine intent on chopping up a convoy carry ing U.S. troops and vitally need ed supplies overseas.
