Four Yanks, led by defending champion Dick Davics of Pebble Beach, Calif., and four English men battled their way into the round of eight Thursday, leaving the host Scots on the outside looking in. Seattle Out Of Light By RON SL'PINSKI United Press International Surging Spokane and Peppy Portland are pushing stumbling Seattle out of the spotlight in their ding-dong battle for second place in the Northern Division of the Pacific Coast League. In the Soutliern Division, San Diego and Dallas-Fort Worth are two for the see-saw in their dog fight for first place. Spokane lefthander Nick Will hits allowed only two hits in beat ing Denver 3-1 Thursday night while Dick Green's two-run homer powered Portland to a 6-5 win over Seattle. It was Seattle's seventh loss in eight games and dropped the Rain, icrs into fourth place, their low est ebb of the season. Seattle went into its skid shortly after the parent Boston Red Sox re called Wilbur Wood, the Rainiers' ace lefthander who was leading the PCL with an earned-run av erage of 1.12. Wood had a 5-2 rec ord. Padre Power Home runs by Mel Queen and Art Shamsky backed four - hit pitching by Ted W ills and George McWilliams to give San Diego a 4-0 shutout of Dallas-Fort Worth. It was merely a return favor be cause the Texans had blanked the Padres the two previous nights. As a result of its win, San Diego sliced the Rangers' lead to l'i games. In other contests.
