UPl Telephot- Tournament Golf Is Tough Living By OSCAR FRALEY I'PI Spurts Writer GRAND BLANC, Mich. (UPP Call tournament golf an easy racket if you like but you can take it from Al Balding of Can ada today that it's a tough way to make a living. Balding, the tall, curly-haired Canadian, was llth in money win nings on the pro tour at the end of the first three months. Then tlie strain tore at the tendons in his right shoulder until now he is in the current Buck Open on a pass and a prayer. It happens to more of them than you think and it makes you won der whether golf is the beneficial game it's cracked up to be. Run down the roster of off-and- on "cripples" and you'll get the message . . . Billy Casper . . . Jack Nicklaus . . . Bill Collins . Art Burke . . . Sammy Snead . . . and the fatigue-ridden Arnold Palmer who has more muscles than most horses and yet had to step dowi. for a rest. Let It Hurt "It almost seems that you have to have something wrong with you to win." shrugged Balding as he headed for an osteopath. "All the doctors can tell you is to play and let it hurt or put it in a sling for two or three months. But no body can afford to do lhat." Palmer, the big man of golf, at the moment is in the divot doldrums and probably won't play in the rich Buick. llorton Smith, who is on hand and once was one of the greatest of the tccside tour ists, says that he warned Palmer three years ago to slow up "I'm strong as a bull. Palmer told him with a delighted laugh But today the Pennsylvania strong hoy is silting this onu out as he tries to recapture his once seemingly endless energy. Venturi had troubles that ruined the one-liinc "golden boy's" chances for com plete stardom. Jackie Burke won the Buick one year with his thumb shot full of cortisone, and the legendary Snead has had hand and back trouble off and on over the years. Balding, the six foot, two-inch Canadian who has been on the tour full time since 1957. has a new club at Markland Wood near Toronto and is looking ever more longingly toward a teaching job. Try Everything "The guys on the tour try every new pill that conies along," he grimaced. "First it was tranquil izers and then anything else that seemed to calm the nerves or re lieve the aches and pains. But you can't win on pills and it's become a truism lhat you can't win If you play too many tournaments. When you do, you tear yourself apart. The average goll prolcssional on the tour averages 35 tournaments a year. That means six days of golf and one day to travel. Count ing the eternal practice and the uracticc rounds, it totals a tre mendous amount of spine and ten don torture.
