THE DOCTOR SAYS Ask Doctor About Specific Medicines PAID IN SALT Our word "salary" is derived frum the latin word "salarium which is what ancient Rome's soldiers called the salt they re ceived as part of their pay By W. G. BRANDSTADT, Written for Newspaper Enterprise Assn. Q In your answer to a ques tion about stuffiness of the nose, you advised using nose drops or sprays that will not interfere with the action of the cilia. Could you give me the names of some of these? A If your trouble is chronic and not due to an allergy, one of the phenylephrine preparations should help you. Consult your doc tor for proper strength and meth od of use. Q What is the cause of retin itis? Is there a cure? A Retinitis is an inflammation of tlic retina w hich lines the back of the inner surface of the eye ball. This surface transmits visual images to the brain. Retinitis usually causes a decrease in the range and acutcness of vision. There arc a variety of causes which include nephritis (kidney disease', diabetes, leukemia, ar teriosclerosis with high blood pres sure, and exposure of the retina to the direct rays ol the sun. Treatment of the underlying cause is of prime importance. It is gen erally necessary to protect the eyes from light, by using smoked glasses and eyedrops that contract the pupils. There is a special kind ol rctini-! lis called pigmentary degenera tion of the retina. In this heredi tary condition the sight is very poor at night and the range of vi sion is greatly restricted. The con dition is progressive. Although many kinds of treatment have been tried, all have proved dis appointing. Q I am a housewife. 64. I bruise very easily. Tlw bruises look terrible, although they do not hurt. What would cause this? Is there any remedy? A In a younger person this is often caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. This could be true in vour case, but as we grow older Truck Driver's Wife Racks Up Little Snip By ANN LANDERS I work the way I did. He agreed Dear Ann Landers: I wish 1 ' as ,he la!( tme he'd ask could get my hands on that little r i 1 I snip who didn't want to invite her fiance s friends to their wedding be cause they were truck drivers. am a gradu ate of Hunter College and I married a truck driver. We have three bright children, own a com. fortable home, take a three-week vacation every year 'twice to Europe since '561 and I have a beautiful nine-stripe beaver coat with a mink collar. The girl who wrote that letter must be living in the dark ages. Today truck drivers make a hand some living. Many of our friends who are professional people and executives of large companies are struggling to get by, but not us. I am proud to be married to a Knight Of The Road. She should have it so good. THE KNIGHT'S LADY. Dear Lady: Many (ruck drivers' wives wrote to say it's a great life, but you said it best. Thanks for your letter. M.D.jother causes must also he con sidered. For example: as the skin becomes less elastic, if the capil laries are damaged by being bumped, blood oozes out more readily than in a younger person. This is apparently more com mon in women than in men, and sometimes the bump that causes the damage is so slight that the person is totally unaware of it until the bruise appears beneath the skin. Q A friend of mine claims that her alfalfa tea has life-giving prop' erties. Is there any food value in alfalfa? A Faith is a wonderful thing, and alfalfa is a wonderful food for some domestic animals. Like many other plants, it contains some vitamins and very few calo ries. Cabbage, cauliflower, and soybeans are better sources of the vitamin K found in alfalfa. Some people are just crazy about alfalfa tea and it is in no way injurious to drink it, but I would be very skeptical of any claims that it can provide great special benefits. The same goes for the so-called health foods that contain alfalfa as one of their in gredients. Q I am a 6fi-vcar-old man. About a year ago I had a cancer removed from my bhtdder. Since then my doctor has been giving me female hormone shots. Is this a recognized method of L"at ment? How long should it be con tinued? Docs it have any bad ef fects? A This is a recognized means of preventing the early return or spread of cancer ol Hie bladder. Your doctor w ill adjust the dosage so that there will be no undesir able side effects of any import ance. This treatment should be continued indefinitely. Dear Ann Landers: I went stea dy with Eddie for a year. We de cided to call it quits because of religious differences which could not be resolved. I'm 20, so please don't think this letter is from a giddy high school sophomore. It took several months to get over my heartache but 1 did re cover and I'm now dating a ter rific guy who is a friend of Ed die's, i! When we first started to datcji I made him promise to keep it strictly platonic. I had had enough of love and didn't want to be hurt again. He has kept his word, darn it. and this is my problem.; I'm sick to death of this brother sister kick. I've fallen hard and I'm sure he has, loo, but he's afraid to make the first move and it's all my fault. We've been dating for three months and if he gives me one more goodnight handshake I'll scream. SELF-VICTIMIZED Dear Self Victimized: Don't scream. You may frighten him away. Just tell him in plain Eng lish that your busted heart had healed and you are ready to give love another chanee. If he gives you a handshake after that con fession, he's no candidate. Dear Ann Landers: It's the time of year when my husband begins to hear the call ot the wild." We have two sons, 10 and 12 years of age. Ever since the boys have been old enough to walk we have spent three weeks every summer camping out and I do mean out. -My husband picks tnc most God forsaken, primitive spots he can find. Some of our camp sites have been so rocky and mis. erable even the Indians didn t want em. , Last year I told him I was through dragging along dishes, pots. pans, bedding, and canned goods, washing clothes by hand and doing without iilumbing. A iwrson has to be crazy to leave the conveniences of home and me to do it. Well, now lie s talking tents again and I am doing a slow burn 1 m perfectly willing to rent a cabin, but no more roughing it He accuses me of being selfish and depriving the boys of real outdoor life. What do you think Ann? THE MU1.E HIIS NAME FOR ME. I Dear Mother: Tell nature bov you've had it with the Lewis and Clark bit and you're holding him to his promise of last year. The boys can get plenty outdoor life and still sleep in a bed at night and take a bath in a tub. If he insists on another tent vacation, tell him to drop post cards when he goes into town for sunburn lotion and mosquito net tingthat you'll be waiting for him at home.
