He had been hitless in his 16 limes at bat prior to the start of the series. San Francisco is idle today but will open a four-game series here Tuesday, It was the third time that Mays hit three or more homers in one game. Former New York Giants and Yankee Slugger Johnny Mize holds the major league record of hitting three homers in a game six times. Mays has hit (our times in one game on April 30, l!)fil. The win was the only one the Giants could salvage out of tlie scries which ended with St. Louis in second place, two games be- hind. Los Angeles is third, 3's games off the pace Before Sunday, the Cardinals had won five in a row and 10 ol their last 11 games Mays drove In four of the Giants six runs with homers No. 8, 9 and 10. He started Ihe scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning and finished with bases-empty pokes in the eighth and ninth. His homers came off pitchers Ernie Broglio, Bob Humphreys and Bob by Shantz. Orlando Ccpeda followed Mays in the eighth with his lOtli homer. Highlander Juan Marical picked up his eighth win to match teammate Billy O'Dcll in the ninth from reliefer Bob Bonn after al lowing three runs in that inning. Dick Groat tripled to open the St. Louis ninth and scored on Stan Musial's single. Doubles by George Altman and Julian Javier finished Marichal and Bonn came on to retire the side. Musial was forced out of the Cardinal lineup for several days in the ninth inning because of a broken blood vessel in the back of tho right knee.
