Dog At Dinner Table Irks Master OS House PACK 10-B Thursday, May 30. 1963 HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Falli, Ore. By ANN LANDERS Dear Ann Landers: Several weeks afio my wife's relatives were invited here for dinner. Aft- , er saying grace I looked up and there was a dog a SO pound . Boxer sitting . at the table di- '. rectly across from me. My brother-in-law proceeded to ladle out beef stew (or the - animal, right on the plate, as if the dog were a person. I an nounced flatly that 1 was leaving the table and would have my din ner in the bedroom. No one said a word and I did just that. Now my brolher-in-law and sis-: ter are furious with me and they refuse to come to our home again unless 1 apologize. My wife is on their side, Ann. .She insists I was rude and ungracious and "a poor host." I refuse to apologize. I contend they owe me an apology. I regct now that I was fool enough to leave my own table and allow that dog to sit there. Had I used my head I would have told them to take the animal into the back yard. Everyone in the family is choos ing up sides and having a say. . Please Ann, may I have your - opinion of all this? NO DINNER COMPANION FOR A DOG Dear No Companion: You owe no one an apology. If your sister and. brother-in-law wish to allow ' their dog to be a guest at their Stable, that's their business, but Ihcy should not assume that the dog Is welcome at the table of relatives. have no wish to see anyone. I go straight home after work and I stay there. Two weeks ago my wife came down to the plant and sniffed around all the women to see if she could track down the perfume. Slie had no luck but in tends to try again, she said I've asked a couple of friend. at work if they can smell any perfume on me and they say no Please tell me what to do about this. 1 am TREED Dear Treed: Overactive imagin. attons have been known to destroy marriages. I hope your wife doesn't lose by a nose. If she persists In this bloodhound rou tine, suggest that she talk her problem over with a professional The Court Records Dear Ann Landers: My prob lem is an unusual one and I need your help. I've been married for 15 years to a woman who says she is in love with me, happy as a lark, and wouldn't trade places with anyone in the world but her suspicious nature is making my life unbearable. , About six months ago she be gan to ask me about the women I work with at the chemical plant. She insisted that she was able to detect an odor of perfume on my shirt and tie and who was I seeing? I am not seeing anyone and I Dear Ann: I am almost 13 but I act, feel and look older. If you met me like on the street you'd take me for a girl of 16. Mom is A O.K. but dad is a creep. Every Friday night a bunch of us girls take turns having the gang over. There are six couples and we are all in the eighth grade. We play records, dance and serve refreshments. The problem is my dad won't let us turn off the lights in the rumpus room when we dance. He is an old man of 41 and doesn t realize H's no fun to dance unless it is dark. Nobody else's parents object and I'm embarrassed that my dad is so old-fashioned. Also I think he is evil-minded. What do you think? MEANIE'S DAUGHTER. Drar Daughter: Your dad sounds like the only parent In the bunch who has a working brain cell. Eighth grade kids should not be partying boy-girl ntyle and danc ing in the dark can lead to both Ing good. You kids are at least three years ahead of yourselves and I say nix to all of it. Are you tempted to smoke be cause the crowd does? If so, send for Ann Landers' booklet, "Teen age Smoking," enclosing with your request 10 cents coin and a long, self -addressed, stamped envelope. Ann Landers will be glad to help you with your problems. Send them to her in care of this newspaper enclosing a stamped self-addressed envelope. C. BRANOSTADT, M.D. Newspaper Enterprise Assn. Varicose veins are among the most common health problems ot mankind. In order io understand them, one needs to understand the circulation. When your heart beats, blood is lorced into your arteries under pressure. This causes the arter ies to pulsate. There is no pulsa. Hon in the veins. In order for the blood to be returned to your heart it must (all by gravity or be squeezed upward by the contraction of your large voluntary muscles. This is one reason why exercise helps circulation, but even this action could not keep the blood moving toward your heart unless your veins were equipped with valves to prevent any backward Dow. The hardest part of the job is getting the blood from your feet back to your heart. Most of the time you are standing or sitting and the blood has to travel up hill. When the veins of the legs are subjected to the pressure of gravity, as when you stand in one spot for a long time, they may dilate. When such dilation has been at work over many years, it may reach a point where the valves can no longer prevent the blood from flowing downward. Mich valves are said to be "incompetent." This is one of the hazards of occupations that require stand ing in one place for long periods, as may be the case with bar bers, dentists, bank tellers, and others. Pregnancy and childbirth also favor the development of varicose veins in some women. When the incompetence is mild there are usually no symptoms, but the condition is likely to be progressive. As it progresses, ach ing pains, easy tiring, and a feel ing of heaviness in the legs may be present. In the early stages, some re- lief may be used by keeping the feet elevated on a footstool as much of the time as possible, and by wearing an elastic weave roller; bandage, or elastic stockings. These procedures do not re move the cause, nor prevent the condition from progressing. On the other hand, in the early stages the veins may be injected with a clotting agent which will turn the incompetent veins into solid scar tissue. The popularity of this method has fluctuated and it is now gen erally agreed that to be effective it must be applied early in the course of the disease. Another important factor is the choice of the clotting agent. Re cent studies indicate that sodium tetradecyl sulfate gives the best results. Taking these veins out of cir culation, far from interfering with the return of blood to the heart. improves the process because the venous system is an inter lacing network with numerous detour channels. The operation:' also helps to prevent these colla teral channels from becoming incompetent. When varicosities have exist ed for many years, such complica tions as varicose ulcers of the skin and inflammation of the veins may occur. These complications are best prevented by having the varicose veins removed. If, however, leg ulcers have already developed they must be healed before the varicose veins can be removed. This usually requires a prolonged stay in bed. After the ulcers are healed, if the varicose veins are not re moved the ulcers will return. Once the veins are removed, the sooner the patient is allowed to walk the better, but an elastic bandage should be worn for i or 3 months after the operation Although varicose veins are common, the greatest damage is done by neglecting them and putting off having them injected or removed.
