Oregon Museum Plans To Build Planetarium The Oregon Museum o( Science and Industry at Portland an nounced plans today (or a $600,000 building project to add two new wings and a planetarium to the OMSI building on S.W. Canyon Rd. Constructed in 1948 with a spec tacular one-day community "barn raising" bee. the museum has rapidly outgrown its present fa cilities, according to Dr. Donald Stotler, OMSI president. "Since 1938. OMSI has enjoyed a 20 per cent increase in use an nually. Last year over 330.000 persons visited the science cen ter. "Today our situation is. simply, that we have run nut of space Classroom space, office, storage and exhibit space are at a prem ium. At present. OMSI science classes are over-subscribed by 50 per cent. Although 5.000 young people registered for these class es we were able to accommodate only 2.500. "OMSI must expand if we are to meet the community's needs now and in the future," he con cluded. Tlie building program envisions construction of a new outdoor planetarium, a wing devoted to the modern science of agriculture and a second wing to be used for the state's educational TV net work offices and telecasting stu dios. Funds for the building program will be sought in a state-wide campaign effort, Stotler reported. Dr. Sam Diack, Portland, who sparked the original OMSI con struction drive, will head up the new campaign effort. The proposed agricultural wing to be known as the Max Lehmann Memorial Agricultural Wing, will house exhibits ranging from gene tics to modern food technology. It is intended to stimulate young people to select technical agricul ture as a vocation and to strength en urban understanding of mod ern scientific agrculture. The contemplated planetarium would replace a temporary plane tarium whose projection equip ment is obsolete. New projection equipment would be housed in a dome 33-ft. in diameter in a struc ture seating 120 persons. It would enable OMSI to produce shows featuring comets, northern lights moon topography, etc., and, in ad dition, would be suitable (or teach space-age mathematics. The girls modeled dresses they had made in homemaking classes or as part of their FHA projects These dresses were entered in f contest sponsored by the high school for the best made dress and best design for its type. Judges of the contest were Fern Doss of Fort Bidwcll and Mary Cook of Eagleville. Winners of the sewing contest were Charlotte .McDowel, first; Virginia Fisher, second; Lindy I.aird. third: Melanie Stanton. fourth, and Shirley French, hon orable mention. The girls modeled all types of clothing from sportswear to cas uals and dressy evening wear. -Models in the afternoon show- were Linda Laird, Rozanna Sweet, Kathy Charlotte, Elna Seymour, French, Virginia Fisher, Susan Cooperridcr, .Melanie Stanton, Lin da Curtis, Betsy Thompson, Oleta Shaffer. House-Approved Debt Limit Bill Pushed By Democrats WASHINGTON (LTD - Sen- a'e Democratic leaders changed their strategy Tuesday for rushing passage of a bill hiking tlie na tional debt limit before the Treasury breaks through t h c present legal ceiling. In an 1Mb hour move, following a White House conference, lead ers decided to seek passage of the House - approved S309 billion debt limit bill, instead of a Sen ate Finance Committee version. Democrats thus abandoned the announced strategy of trying to send the Senate measure to a House-Senate conference group Kennedy Signs Outdoor Bill WASHINGTON UPD - Prcsi dent Kennedy Tuesday signed into law a bill to step up coordinated federal, state and local expansion of outdoor recreation programs. The legislation will enable the Interior Department, through its new Bureau of Outdoor Recrea tion, to undertake planning, re search and coordination tasks. with hopes for fast action on a compromise bill. The House bill would lift the debt ceiling to $309 billion just for July and August. The Senate Finance Committee voted to al low that limit for a 12-month period. Republicans served notice they would oppose tlie move to scrap the finance committee version on the floor. The decision to try to reverse tlie finance group's amendment on the floor, rather than give the House a second crack at the bill, came after an early morning meeting of Senate Democratic leaders and President Kennedy. It was believed that Treasury officials impressed the leadership with their argument that tlie present $305 billion ceiling must be increased as quickly as pos sible. The debt is due to rise to $305.2 billion by the close of busi ness Wednesday. Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield. Mont., sought permission for tlie finance group to meet in an effort to have the bill changed back to the House version. But Senate GOP Lead er Everett M. Dirksen, III., blocked this by objecting. It was then that the decision was made to force a showdown vote on the issue on the floor. Wednef..
