Succumbs To Leukemia

Ernie Davis, 2.1. the All-America
football fullback at Syracuse who
was stricken with leukemia last
summer, died at Lakeside Hospi
tal here Saturday.
Death came at 1 a.m. for the
23-year-old athlete.
Davis had been working for a
soft drink company out of Cleve
land until two days ago and said
he felt well.
He checked in at the Cleveland
Browns' office Thursday morning
and told Art Modcll. club presi
dent, that he was going into the
hospital ' for several days.

Burial will be in Klmira, N. Y-,

Davis probably was the most
heralded football player ever to
come out of college. He was the
first Negro winner of the coveted
and enabled the Yanks tn pile up
a solid margin.
