I Youngsters Plan Circus For May 18 An amateur circus presented! oy 50 Klamath Falls youngsters and about 15 adults will be held at the Klamath Auditorium, May 1. starting at 3 p.m. Adult tick ets Mill cost SO cents and chil dren 25 cents and all proceeds ttill be donated to the Preshy ierian Intercommunity Hnspitai Fund. Mrs. Violet Schumman, 3331 Crest Street, is the project man ager. The Normadean Dance Stu dio will contribute dance acts and the YMCA will sponsor a tram poline act. Juanita Stevens, a stu dent at KU. will perform with her professional baton. Other acts will include clown, archery, skating and magician performances. The Oregon constitution prohib its gambling except for racing. The bill went Ui the Senate. Rep. Philip Lane. D Portland, said tlie pinball machine issue centered on questions of crime and morality. The pinball machine of today is nothing more than a gambling device." he said, "in that it a! lows the player to build up games, and then there is an un der-the-counter or over-the-coun ter payoff." He said the machines have a reflex unit to assure no player can beat them over the long haul. Lang said the 1957 Portland vice probe centered around the groups controlling such devices. "The criminal element supports much of its operation by this kind of device," he said. He said a ucll placed pinball machine col lects $300 to WOO a week. Hep. Eugene Hulett, D-Eugene. expressed lcar the bill also would outlaw machines "purely for pleasure," such as miniature bowling alleys. He said he saw Inventory Tax Relief Pleas Heard By Senate SALEM IL'PI' Pleas for in venlory tax relief through a taxi on net business income, and re quests for property tax exemp- lions for labor temples and Cham ber of Commerce property were heard Wednesday by tlie Senate Tax Committee. The Senate group took no action 1 these measures, but did ap prove a bill exempting pension, retirement and Social Security benefits from taxation. Urging passage of the House- approved inventory tax relief measure were Doug Heider. Asso ciated Oregon Industries; Roger Martin, an equipment wholesaler. and Lew Norris, Oregon Farm Bureau Federation. All claimed inventory taxes were inequitable, hindered busi ness expansion, and that the House bill was "a step in the right direction." The House measure would levy a one per cent lax on net business income to pay for a 25 per cent reduction in inventory tax. Sen. Walter Pearson. D - Port land, attacked the proposal, and accused businessmen of wanting businesses which do not now pay inventory tax, such as profession al firms, to share in the inven tory tax load. Pearson said a sales tax should be enacted, and that Inventory taxes should be eliminated. Walter Lofgren and Tom Scan- Ion of the AFL . CIO said they wanted labor temples exempted from property taxes in the inter ests of "fairness and equity." Lodges, legion halls, granges and other fraternal groups now are exempted from property taxes. In a unique display of candor. the labor spokesmen said they did not feel any property should be exempted from property taxes, but as long as some were exempt ed, they wanted to share in the benefits. Representatives of the Portland and Salem Chambers of Com merce said the House - approved bill which would grant the tax re lief to labor temples should be amended to include property own ed by Chambers of Commerce. nothing wrong with these. "You can gamble on anything." he said. "This will simply drive them into back rooms." Lang and Hulett both once were law enforcement officers. Rep. Richard Eymann. D-Mar-cola. said Oregon gets $360,000 a biennium from a tax on amuse ment devices. "I don't believe we can put a price on morality." Lang replied. Hulett said the state can control gambling by enlorcmg present laws. Guard rails along U.S. high ways use up about 100 million wooden posts each year.
