South's bidding was definitely of the slam-bang type, but as he pointed out afterwards he had a pretty good play for seven hearts and it was only bad luck phis good defense that beat him at his small slam contract. He won the opening diamond lead with his ace and promptly led out the ace and king of spades. West ruffed, went into a long huddle and led the king of clubs. Dummy's ace held the trick. South luffed back to his hand, ruffed the five of spades with dummy's eight of trumps, ruffed back to his hand again, ruffed his nine of spades came back to his hand to draw trumps, but had to go down one when East showed up with three trumps to the jack. Where did the brilliant defense come in? Ninety-nine players out of too would have led the queen of diamonds from the West hand after ruffing the second spade. In that case South could simply ruff one spade in dummy and run out all his trumps. On the last trump lead West would have to discard down to one club in or der to hang on to the jack of dia monds. South would then throw away dummy's last diamond and East would have to jettison a club in order to hold the high spade whereupon South would make the last two tricks with the ace and seven of clubs in dummy. While there can be no valid criticism of South's play, if he had known where all the cards w ere ' he could have made the hand by cither of two other lines of play. Improve your brklse game!
