two-hour meeting of the Interna
tional Executive Roard. announced!
today the union's Wage Policy
Committee was not being called!.

nation's basic steel industry.
A four-paragraph statement by
McDonald appeared to hold nope
that USW and 11 major steel pro
ducers may be able to work out
mutually satisfactory understand
inns within the framework of the
industry's Human Relations Com
mittee. .
However, failing this or in
case an understanding is reached
McDonald said the executive
board would be reconvened "to
determine what action we may
take."
The announcement also noted
that, "no understandings have been;
reached" on any subjects either
in the human relations area or on
economic items for which the cur
rent two-yenf contracts may be reopened.
"The board has approved our
efforts to date and gave full con
sent to proceed along the same
course in hope the mutual prob
lems wo face with the steel in
dustry may be resolved within the
next few week s," McDonald's
statement added.,
The USW president said It was
the intention of the Human Rela
tions Committee "to discuss every
thing possible" in relation to
reaching an agreement with the
steel firms.
Asked about recent selective
price increases by many compan
ies. McDonald replied:
"We are not concerned with
prices.. .We are not discussing
them at all."

14. in St. Patrick s Catholic
Church. Final rites were at the
100F Cemetery, with Father John

Parents and friends are invited
to hear the concert and to remain

Thursday as follows: first, second

Dear Ann Landers: My parents
had a beautiful marriage for 34
years. On the date of their wed
ding anniversary my brothers and
1 always sent a gift and took
the folks to dinner at the elegant
hotel where their romance start
ed. (Mom was a waitress there
and pop worked in the kitchen.)
Pop died five months ago. The
anniversary date comes up in a
few 'weeks. Should we continue
the practice of sending a gilt
And should we take mom to din
ner at the hotel, as we always
have?
One of my brothers says we
should carry on, as before. My
other brother says we should let
the day pass and do nothing. I
don't know what would be best
for mother so I'm writing for ad.

Dear Ann: I'm 17 and dating a
very nice college freshman. My
cousin Rozclla, who is my age,
has trouble getting dates. .My
mother keeps insisting that I fix
her up. Rozella isn't very bright
and I can see why she doesn't
attract fellows.
Last weekend I asked my boy
friend to get Rozella a date to a
Campus Hop. He dug up some
guy from Boston and it was all
set. We were supposed to double,
but they broke away toward the
end of the evening and went on
their own.
The next morning Rozella's
mother called my mother and
gave her an earful. She said Roz
clla got home at 4 a.m., dead
drunk and her clothes in a mess.
My aunt blames me for fixing
her up with "a no good bum."
I am sick about this because my
mother and aynt say it's all my

Adam Clayton Powell, D-N.Y., ex
tracted a thin gold lighter from
a special pocket of his expensive
ly tailored jacket and applied
flame to the end of a ChurchiU-
sized cigar.
He settled back in a leather
chair and smiled at two UPI re
porters who had come to inter
view him in his congressional of
fice, which overlooks the Capitol
grounds from Room 459 of the old
House Office Building.
It was the easy, confident smile
of a veteran politican who figures
he can take care of himself, no
matter how pointed the questions
may get.
Replies to Critics
"Mr. Powell," one of the news
men began, "you have been under
heavy fire recently from some of
your own colleagues in Congress.
They have accused you of abus-.
ing the privileges of your office
by such practices as junkcteering
and nepotism- They have tried to
clip your wings by slashing the
budget of the House Education
and Labor Committee which you
head.
"You have replied by charging
vour critics with racial prejudice
Do you really think that your only
offense is that you arc a Negro
That's right." Powell replied. I
have said before and will say
again, unequivocally, they are at
tacking me because I am a Ne
gro. What is worse from their
viewpoint. 1 am a Negro who s
won a place in the power struc
ture, as chairman of an important
House committee. Tliey can t for
give me for that."
0. Quite aside from any ques
tion of race, don't you think that
your own personality, your rather
flamboyant way ol doing tnings,
may have something to do with
upsetting your colleagues?
A. Yes. I d agree w ith thai. I no

try to hide. I do right out in the
open. I'm not a hypocrite.
Criticized Over Trip
Powell suggested that it was the
bi-racial nature of his "staff'.'
which made this trip so reprehen
sible in the eyes of his critics.
"Despite all of the wisecracks
that were made," he said, "I did
go to Europe to study the Common
Market, and I filed a long and
detailed report on the impact of
the Common Market on U.S. la
bor." (1. Don't you think there are
some Americans who disapprove
of congressional junkets on prin
ciple, who just don't want to see
their lawmakers, regardless of
color, taking plush vacations at
government expense? , I
A. Well. I think we ought to'
make it clear that not one penny
of U.S. tax funds was spent on
my trip to Europe or on most
such congressional trips. They are
financed entirely ouL.of the 'coun
terpart funds' which are built up

accepted a Kremlin invitation to
send a delegation to Moscow to
discuss the Sino-Soviet ideological
dispute, the New China news agen
cy reported today.
The agency suggested the talks

congressmen should take advan

who are afraid of planes.
Q. What about this business of
putting your wife on the congres
sional payroll at a salary of near
ly $13,000 a year, even though she
living down in Puerto Rico?
A. She earns her salary by an
swering the letters I get from my
Puerto Rican constituents in Har
lcm. I have no apology to make
about putting a relative on the
payroll. The only difference be
tween me and my colleagues on
this matter is that I'm not a hypo
crite about it.
Q. Do you see no wrong in
nepotism?
A. I think nepotism is a won
derful thing until congressional
salaries are increased.
Q. How do your constituents re
act to stories about how you're
living it up ill Washington, Paris
and Puerto Rico?
A. They love me for it. They
enjoy it vicariously with me. I'm
just doing the tilings they'd do if
they were in Congress.
Throughout the interview, Pow
ell had remained relaxed, amiable
and unruffled. But he tensed a bit
when the questioning shifted to
his role as pastor of the Abyssin
ian Baptist Church in Harlem.
One of the reporters commented
that Powell's personal code of
morality including his well-publi
cized fondness for fine wines, ex
pensive night clubs, fast cars and
pretty women "seems to differ
somewhat from the norm" of the
Baptist ministry. '
Powell's smilingly acknowledged
that he is not a typical Baptist
preacher. But he said with sudden
seriousness that "I really believe
in the kind of ministry I've prac
ticed for 33 years."
"I believe that the practice of
brotherhood is the fundamental de
mand of Christianity," he said.
"I believe the church has been
burdened with too much emphasis
on picayune matters of personal
morality, and has neglected the
more important matter of fighting
for racial and social justice."
He said his religious attitudes
are now based entirely on the so
called "Jefferson Bible," a com
pilation of the sayings of Jesus
Christ which was made by Thom
as Jefferson.
"I can't find anything in the
sayings of Jesus against moder
ate drinking, dancing and card
playing," Powell said. "But I do
find a great deal that He said
against hating and turning your
back on your brother."
). Doesn't the Jefferson Bible
include the words of Jesus about
divorce being wrong, and remar
riage of a divorced person the
equivalent of adultery? How do
you square that passage with your
three marriages and two divorces?
Powell paused for a long mo
ment before answering.
"I won't make any rationaliza
tions," he said at last. "I think
the concept of lifelong marriage
laid down by Jesus is absolutely
correct. In this day and lime, it
is a hard law to follow, but it is
a good one. and I stand guilty of
having broken it."

versial highway relocation project
in the historic mining town of
Jacksonville would be delayed
pending further study.
Warne Nunn, Gov. Mark Hat
field's executive assistant, said
many protests to the relocation, i
which would have located the
highway on a diagonal through
the town's street grid, had been
received.
He said the Highway Depart
ment has agreed to uphold ccn-
struction, pending further study of
the historic values of the town,
and possible alternative routes.
