Vocal Music Slated By City Schools The annual elementary vocal music festival of the city schools! will be iicld in Pelican Court at KUHS May 16 at 7:30 p.m. The massed choruses totaling 330 voices from six of the elementary schools will present a group of! seven numbers. As an added attraction a Fire Season Date Asked The Klamath Forest Protective Association and the Winema and Fremont National forests have re quested the stale forester to set midnight, Monday, May 20, as the beginning of the fire season, Supervisor George Warded of the KFPA disclosed Tuesday. If approved by the slate for ester, the request will go to Gov. Mark O. Hatfield for final ap proval. After the dale designated as the opening of the fire season, all open buring within one eighth mile of limbered lands will be regulated by permit. Burning per-! mits may be obtained from the KFPA or llie headquarters of either of the two national for csts. Unemployment Rate Raises SALEM UPI - Insured un employment rose to 5.9 per cent for the week ending May 2. Em ployment Commissioner David Cameron said Thursday. The rate was 5 per cent a year ago, and 5 8 per cent four weeks before May 2. He said the highest rates of in sured unemployment were at Bak er with 13.8 per cent, and at Grants Pass with 13.2 per cent. Lowest rate was at Corvallis 3.3 per cent. The action came at a hearine on the Senate-passed workmen's compensation bill, termed a modi fied "three-way" bill. AOI has supported most fea tures of the bill. Labor also has supported parts of it.
